Biocomposites in Automotive Applications

Biocomposites in Automotive Applications PDF Author: Srikanth Pilla
Publisher: SAE International
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 139

Book Description
The automotive sector has taken a keen interest in lightweighting as new required performance standards for fuel economy come into place. This strategy includes parts consolidation, design optimization, and material substitution, with sustainable polymers playing a major role in reducing a vehicle's weight. Sustainable polymers are largely biodegradable, biocompatible, and sourced from renewable plant and agricultural stocks. A facile way to enhance their properties, so they can indeed replace the ones made from fossil fuels, is by reinforcing them with fibers to make composites. Natural fibers are gaining more acceptance in the industry due to their renewable nature, low cost, low density, low energy consumption, high specific strength and stiffness, CO2 sequestration potential, biodegradability, and less wear imposed on machinery. Biocomposites then become a very feasible way to help address the fuel consumption challenge ahead of us. This book, entitled Biocomposites in Automotive Applications, is segmented into three sections and includes eleven hand-picked technical papers covering: * Processing and characterization of biocomposites * Automotive applications of biocomposites * A perspective on automotive sustainability It is a must read for those interested in the growing importance of composites used in automotive applications and their impact on sustainable mobility.

Sustainable Mobility

Sustainable Mobility PDF Author: Ashwani Kumar
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1394166818
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 285

Book Description
This book is essential for anyone interested in understanding and implementing sustainable transportation practices, as it provides comprehensive insights into the challenges, advancements, and policies related to sustainable mobility. Sustainable transportation refers to any means of transportation that is “green” and has a low impact on the environment. The goal of sustainable transportation is to balance our current and future needs. As per the United Nations Brundtland Commission (WCED, 1987), sustainable mobility can be defined as “mobility that satisfies the needs of present generations without compromising future generations”, but in the modern era, we are compromising the needs of the next generation in terms of pollution, depletion of fossil fuels, global warming, poor air quality, and hazardous gases. The three main pillars of sustainability, economics, environment, and social issues, are crushed by modern development, so there is a need to shift from traditional means of transportation to sustainable transportation. Under the vision of sustainable mobility, better infrastructure and services will be provided to support the movement of goods and people. This outcome will be achieved only if four goals are pursued simultaneously: developing the right policy, building awareness, developing intelligent transportation, and creating green vehicles. Sustainable Mobility: Policies, Challenges and Advancements will discuss transitions from conventional to sustainable mobility, infrastructure development challenges in this transition period, new vehicle policies, and the latest autonomous vehicles for intelligent transportation. The main highlights of the book are energy efficient technologies for transportation, accessibility and safety of the transport system, environmental footprint, health impacts, economic development, and social growth. Sustainable mobility is essential to economic and social development. The environmental impacts of transport can be reduced by reducing the weight of vehicles, creating sustainable styles of driving, reducing the friction of tires, encouraging electric and hybrid vehicles, improving the walking and cycling environment in cities, and enhancing the role of public transport, especially electric vehicles. Going green and sustainable is not only beneficial for the company, but it also maximizes the benefits of an environmental focus in the long term.

Book Description
The Global Roadmap of Action Toward Sustainable Mobility is the culmination of a joint effort by the Sustainable Mobility for All (SuM4All) to develop a comprehensive policy framework to assist decision makers in cities and countries as well as practitioners at development banks to identify gaps, necessary steps, and appropriate instruments to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and improve the sustainability of their transport sector. On the basis of the imperative established by the Global Mobility Report (2017), the GRA private sector consultations paper and the 6 GRA policy papers (Urban, Rural, Gender, Efficiency, Safety and Green mobility) comes this centerpiece report - embodying the collective knowledge of all 55 SuM4All Member organizations and 180 experts. It was developed through an iterative process to ensure its relevance and practicality. Over 50 policy decision makers at the country and city levels engaged on various drafts and to share their experiences, and more than 25 large corporations were questioned on constraints in the enabling environment to innovate and create the solutions of the future. Donors supporting this effort over an 18-month period included: the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank and the Michelin Foundation. With this tool in hand, SuM4All is now equipped to engage with decision makers in a new dialogue on mobility and support their transition towards sustainable mobility. The content of this paper has also been made accessible and usable to all in the 'Online Tool Toward Sustainable Mobility' hosted on the SuM4All website
