This thesis, with regard to its basic methodoligical approach, relies significantly on Slavoj Zizek's elaborations of Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory. More specifically, it adopts the Lacanian account of the operations of fantasy to explore the expectations and assumptions of Chinese intellectual discourse. For Lacanian theorists, psychoanalysis is not merely an analytic theory and therapeutic practice revolving around the psyche of the individual. The dominant bipolarities: individual/collective and subjective/objective are utterly rejected in Lacanian discourse. The basic Lacanian thesis is that what constitutes the subject and the social (in Lacanian jargon, the big Other) is the Lack, which prevents it from acquiring real fullness, and in turn, spurs the desire for fullness (of the subject in relation to the projected Other). It is this constitutive impossibility that marks both the domain of the individual and that of the social: it is impossible not only for the subject to acquire a full identity, but also for the Other to be fully constructed in a given socio-symbolic order.

This book argues that there is a new, Sinological form of orientalism at work in the world. It has shifted from a logic of ‘essential difference’ to one of ‘sameness’ or general equivalence. "China" is now in a halting but inevitable process of becoming-the-same as the USA and the West. Orientalism is now closer to the cultural logic of capitalism, even as it shows the afterlives of colonial discourse. This shift reflects our era of increasing globalization; the migration of orientalism to area studies and the pax Americana; the liberal triumph at the "end" of history and the demonization of Maoism; an ever closer Sino-West relationship; and the overlapping of anti-communist and colonial discourses. To make the case for this re-constitution of orientalism, this work offers an inter-disciplinary analysis of the China field broadly defined. Vukovich takes on specialist work on the politics, governance, and history of the Mao and reform eras, from the Great Leap Forward to Tiananmen, 1989; the Western study of Chinese film; recent work in critical theory which turns on ‘the China-reference"; and other global texts about or from China. Yet as a philosophical concept, copying remains poorly understood. Working comparatively across cultures and times, Marcus Boon undertakes an examination of what this word means—historically, culturally, philosophically—and why it fills us with fear and fascination. He argues that the dominant legal-political structures that define copying today obscure much broader processes of imitation that have constituted human communities for ages and continue to shape various subcultures today.
