Book Description
Excerpt from Great Composers and Their Work This work does not pretend to give a complete presentation Of musical biography. Many Of the lesser composers who did not influence musical history in any way have been omitted from its pages, or dismissed with a mere mention. It has been the effort Of the author, however, to bring to gether the lives of the great composers in such a manner that the average reader (with out any technical knowledge Of music) may understand how their work aided in musical development, and in what degree their schools were interwoven. In order to make this point more clear, the chronological order has not been adhered to where a departure from it seemed to make more definite the influence. Classical Music

Classical Music PDF Author: Phil G. Goulding
Publisher: Ballantine Books
ISBN: 0307760464
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 657

Book Description
MAKE A SOUND INVESTMENT IN CLASSICAL MUSIC Who are the ten most important classical composers? Who in the world was Palestrina? Why did Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" cause a riot? Which five of each important composer's works should you buy? What is a concerto and how does it differ from a sonata? Maybe you don't know the answers to these questions; author Phil Goulding certainly didn't. When Goulding first tried to learn about classical music, he found himself buried in an avalanche of technical terms and complicated jargon--so he decided to write the book he couldn't find. The result is a complete classical music education in one volume. Comprehensive, discriminating, and delightfully irreverent, Classical Music provides such essential information as: * Rankings of the top 50 composers (Bach is #1. Borodin is #50) * A detailed and anecdotal look at each composer's life and work * The five primary works of each composer and specific recommended CDs for each. * Further great works of each composer--if you really like him * Concise explanations of musical terminology, forms, and periods * A guide to the parts and history of the symphony orchestra "This book uses every conceivable gimmick to immerse readers in the richness of classical music: lists, rankings, sidebars devoted to lively anecdotes, and catchy leads." --The Washington Post "One terrific music appreciation book...The information is surprisingly detailed but concisely presented. Goulding's writing style is breezy yet mature....[He] has raised music appreciation from a racket to a service." --The Arizona Daily Star

Book Description
Excerpt from Famous Composers and Their Works To return to the Paris visit, it may be deemed probable that one result of it was the erection of a new Academy of Music, authorized by the king in 1570. The only composition known to have been produced by Lasso in Paris was sent to Duke Albert as some proof of my gratitude. In 1574 Lasso set out for Paris once more, but when he had gone as far as Frankfort he learned that King Charles IX. Was dead; so he returned to Munich, where he resumed the work of composition with undiminished activity. Lasso never left Munich again and a detailed record of his life subsequent to 1575 would consist chiefly of a chronological cata logue of the works which he published. It may be said that he did not produce any large compositions in the years 1578 - 80. The Duke, who had con firmed him for life in his appointment on his return from Munich, had become ill, and in October, I 5 79, this generous and high-minded patron of the arts breathed his last. Pages : 354

Book Description
Excerpt from The Great Composers, or Stories of the Lives of Eminent Musicians The personal life of some great men, apart from the books they wrote, the machines they invented, the doctrines they taught, or the discoveries they made, is often hardly worth the telling, and there is even nobility in the self effacing thought that some have uttered, Remember my work, if you will, but let myself be forgotten.' But there are other great men, and all those to whom the name of artists is now applied, belong to this class, whose work, appealing as it does to the emotions, is itself peculiarly the product (if it is their work at all) of the emotional part of the man - he lives and works and rules in the wide field of the spiritual and the ideal, and without exception, the lives of such men, being so closely related to their work that the one can hardly exist or be understood without the other, never fail to be interesting and full of what we call 'romance' interwoven with everything they conceived, achieved, or were foiled in. And especially, it seems to me, is this true of all the great musicians who have lived. In studying their lives, from Mozart to Mendelssohn, I have found the peculiar sensitiveness to pleasure and pain, the over owing in all their life - ln their words and their work - of their keen delight in living and in the wonderful and beautiful world, which with eyes sometimes even bewildered with the sight of the loveliness that to others perhaps seems but a mere arrangement of colour or odd murmur of confused sounds, they are never tired of gazing on and having a part in - the true sign of the poet, be he a worker in words, tones, or colours And to show some thing of this life without pretension or learned disquisition.
