Book Description
Excerpt from The Great Cities of the Modern World There is a saying, as Old as it is true, that he who would be a writer must first Of all have something to write - something new to tell, or some new or better way of putting forth what is already known. This volume has not been called into existence as some thing new, but because there was not, so far as could be found, any work devoted en titely to a description of the outward appearance and real position of the great cities OF the modern world. A metropolis represents a focus of power; the chief forces of a country's civilization are centered in its great towns; and it has been believed that in giving a description of the large cities of the chief countries of the world, and bringing them together in a classified volume, there will be presented in a condensed form the leading features, not only of the great cities of the world, as a whole, but also of the civic national life of all the important countries of the globe. The endeavor has been to prepare a book instructive and interesting to readers of all ages, but especially to place before young people a clear and, in a measure, complete idea Of the greatest cities of our time, rated according to size, importance in intellectual, commercial, and manu facturing power, and descriptive of population and architectural appearance. In all cases the aim has been to make the leading features - either of a single city or a national group - stand out prominently and leave the strongest impression. To combine all these characteristics into a single volume upon so broad a subject it has been necessary to consult a multitude of authorities; and, although these are far too many for the briefest enumeration. It is but just to acknowledge that valuable aid has been received from the standard encyclopaedias and from nearly all the leading works of reference of both special and general character whose scope comes in any way within that of the Great. Book Description
Excerpt from Great Cities of the World Ir is a somewhat ungracious task to pick and choose from among the World's metropolises a certain number to be classified as the Great Cities of the World. To the inhabitant of every busy city his own town is not only great, but the greatest. If not in population then in tradition, history or surroundings, the claim to greatness will be proudly advanced and as strenuously insisted upon, and woe unto him who seeks to dim the luster or belittle the proportions of the city's record of importance. In this compilation, however, the editor has sought to avoid the disputed question of constructive greatness, and to base the selection rather upon the single claim to bigness as given by the census returns. Population is, after all, the one material test - even wealth and commerce standing below it in comparison. Many a goodly city of our own land should really have place in this list if the wealth of its citizens, the importance of its manufactures or its trade, and the position it holds in the ever lengthening honor-roll of progressive American cities were here to have consideration. And every such city, when compared with the sleepy, retrogressive and often tumble-down towns of the far-off Orient or of those less pushing nationalities familiarly known as the effete monarchies of Europe would surely have a better claim to the distinctive title of Great cities. In the limited space allowed him, however, the editor has striven to do justice to all lands - with, perhaps, just a shade of favoritism toward America. The voice of the census-taker has been heard in the land even while this book has been preparing, and the relative position of the cities as given in the volume may not be in strict accord with the result of the investigations of these modern inquisitors but the endeavor has been made to make the order taken as nearly correct as possible, for not all the earth's cities are of the character of many of those Oriental towns where the census-enumerator is unknown and where the population, always estimated, has a fluctuating margin that varies from two hundred thousand to a million. Colorado Cities and Places (Classic Reprint)

Colorado Cities and Places (Classic Reprint) PDF Author:
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780267739417
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 62

Book Description
Excerpt from Colorado Cities and Places Such extraordinary inducements to invalids and visitors of every class are made doubly attractive by reason of their accessibility in luxuriously furnished railway carriages (involving no hazard to life or limb), and the very superior hotel, livery, fishing and other accommodations provided at all the noteworthy places of resort for the enter tainment of guests - at prices incomparably more reasonable than are charged at fashionable Eastern spas. Another advantage is the Splendid triune vestibule cities aligned at convenient distances north and south along the mountain range, which afford visitors an opportunity for a few days preliminary rest and a satisfactory arrangement of plans of departure for ulterior destinations. These Cities are metropolitan in Character and represent to an equal extent the civilization, enterprise, wealth, prosperity and refinement of the more populous centers of older States. Modern-built, superbly equipped railways radiate from them to any locality the traveler wishes to reach, and all depart from and arrive in commodious union depots. A journey in their trains up and through grand canons to higher altitudes in the heart of the Rockies, constitutes in itself a never-to-be-forgotten experience of astonishment and delight. Where to go is a question fully answered by the foregoing brief statement. Colorado, it is obvious (and this is being more generally acknowledged every year), possesses more attractions in infinitely greater variety and better suited to the wants of the many, from the invalid in humble circumstances to the plutocrat with more money than he knows how to get rid of, than any other section of country on the face of the globe. It is a State whose resources of entertainment are not limited to any one favored spot. No pent-up Saratoga contracts its powers. Instead of one, two, or a dozen, it has Izzmdreds of places where the temporary sojourner and his family or friends can find more genuine comfort and healthful enjoyment than ever before dreamed of. The Image of the City

The Image of the City PDF Author: Kevin Lynch
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 9780262620017
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.
