The Water Resource (Great Artesian Basin) Plan 2006 provides the framework for the management of Queensland's GAB groundwater. The plan is implemented through the Great Artesian Basin Resource Operations Plan 2007. Six Great Artesian Basin discharge spring complexes were monitored following the recommended guidelines (Fensham & Fairfax 2009*) and results indicate that there may have been increases in extent of some springs when comparing satellite imagery from 2008 with 2011 on-ground mapped extent. Results of macroinvertebrate surveys and sampling for the presence of and damage by alien species (pigs and mosquitofish) in spring habitats have shown that threats other than water resource development are likely to be as important for management of Great Artesian Basin spring ecosystems.
