Book Description
Modeling and simulation tools have been an integral part of engineering world for a long time. Various Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools have been extensively used in various industries and research to evaluate the performance of electronic systems. The advancement of such design tools also has influenced the optical communication sector such that there has been a continuous progress on the Photonic Design Automation (PDA) tools. Currently, many software for simulating optical communications are available. However, they are very expensive and conceal the information on how components are modeled. To avoid these constraints, we developed our own PDA software for optical communication. This thesis delves into the development of Graphical Unser Interface (GUI) of our software. The studied GUI software conforms to the feature of standard simulation software and assists the users to perform a system-level simulation of fiber optic communication. The developed GUI allows the users to design their layout, run the simulation and view the results in the form of data or plot. The GUI is explained with respect to the graphical layout and the interactive features of the components. The detailed structure is described along with the Java library used to build them. The interactive aspects of GUI are investigated, for adding the hierarchical feature to our GUI software. In addition, a plotting tool is created for the GUI. The thesis provides comprehensive information on working principle of GUI for simulation software and describes the addition of plotting tool and hierarchical design in detail.

Book Description
Optical network design and modelling is an essential issue for planning and operating networks for the next century. The main issues in optical networking are being widely investigated not only for WDM networks but also for optical TDM and optical packet switching. This book aims to contribute to further progress in optical network architectures, design, operation and management and covers the following topics in detail: OAM functions and layered design of photonic networks; network planning and design; network modelling; analysis and protocols of optical LANs; network availability and performance modelling. This book contains the selected proceedings of the International Working Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling, sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and was held in February 1997, in Vienna, Austria. The valuable book will be essential rading for personnel in computer/communication industries, and academic and research staff in computer science and electrical engineering.

Development of Computer Based Simulation Model for Erbium-doped Fiber Amplifier

Development of Computer Based Simulation Model for Erbium-doped Fiber Amplifier PDF Author: Mst. Fowzia Akhter
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Optical amplifiers
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
The founding of Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) created a new era in communication technology, since it has the ability to provide a broad and high optical gain within the optical communication bandwidth (1013 to 1016 Hz). To date, EDFA is one of the active research areas in the field of optical communication. Many researches on one-stage (single pass and double pass) EDFAs have been carried out with well-established mathematical models. Recently, researchers are seeking interest to work on multi-stage (triple pass, quadruple pass etc.) EDFAs to achieve higher gain and lower noise figure for long haul optical communication systems. Although some researches have been done on multi-stage EDFAs, no mathematical model is developed till now. In addition to that the current commercial simulators available in the market cannot be used to determine the number of Erbium ions concentration in energy level 1 (N1) and energy level 2 (N2), while these parameters play an important role to determine the optimum fiber length and pump power. This thesis comes out with mathematical models for designing all possible two-stage and three-stage EDFA configurations. The mathematical models are developed based on energy levels rate equations and relaxation method. The effect of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) is also included while determining the overall gain and noise figure of multi-stage EDFAs. Furthermore, a simulation model incorporating one-stage, two-stage and three-stage EDFA is developed using Matlab graphical user interface (GUI). The interface of this simulation model is developed in such a way that based on the input variables (fiber length, signal power, loss factors etc.) given by a user, the performance parameters (gain and noise figure) are shown on the display. The characteristics of all possible one-stage, two-stage and three-stage EDFAs are analyzed with the variation of pump power and signal power using this proposed simulation model. The optimum design parameters (pump power, signal power, fiber length) are also determined for specific input variables. The results obtained from this simulation model are compared against experimental data in order to validate the proposed model and the results are found equivalent to practical.

A Framework and Graphical User Interface (GUI) for Moving Object Simulation

A Framework and Graphical User Interface (GUI) for Moving Object Simulation PDF Author: Aparna Jyothi Patsa
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Discrete-time systems
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
"Emerging spatial applications like vehicle or human trajectories archival data, fire front monitoring, flight simulators, weather forecast, etc., have moving objects which change position, shape and size over time. These are the so-called "Spatiotemporal objects". Spatiotemporal objects have aspects like influence of the static obstacles, influence of other moving objects, route, etc. The behavior of these systems overtime is difficult to analyze theoretically. These characteristics are the basis for the specification and development of a new simulator which simulates the moving objects, their interactions, influence of the environment they are in and defines an infrastructure which models a real-world environment and provides some visualization. This thesis offers a framework for a simulator where the suer defines the exact behavior of the simulator, taking into consideration the characteristics of a wider range of applications"--Abstract, leaf iii.
