Book Description
"This is a book about what the science of perception can tell us about visualization. There is a gold mine of information about how we see to be found in more than a century of work by vision researchers. The purpose of this book is to extract from that large body of research literature those design principles that apply to displaying information effectively"--

Representations of Space and Time

Representations of Space and Time PDF Author: Donna J. Peuquet
Publisher: Guilford Press
ISBN: 9781572307735
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
Recent advances in information technology have enabled scientists to generate unprecedented amounts of earth-related data, with tremendous potential for dealing with pressing social, economic, and environmental issues. Yet the volume and heterogeneity of available data clearly overwhelm traditional analytical approaches, as well as the human capacity to derive patterns and useful insights. This book examines how geospatial knowledge can be analyzed and represented in a manner that not only is accurate and coherent, but also makes intuitive sense to the end user. Integrating concepts and approaches from geography, computer science, cognitive psychology, and philosophy, Donna J. Peuquet explores the processes by which people acquire, represent, and utilize spatiotemporal knowledge. Arguing that the human user and the computer must be viewed as interrelated components of a single system, she provides principles and recommendations for improving the design of geographic information systems (GIS) and other geospatial modeling tools. An ideal student text or professional reference, this book fills a crucial need in geographic information science.

Book Description
The message of the book is straightforward and easy to apply: it derives from the interweaving of long years of field work with a solid theoretical background. The practice advocated presents children with the opportunity to confront contents and situations which are only too often considered inaccessible for them. The abundant examples presented show that when provided with an adequate toolkit composed of graphic texts, children are inherently motivated by the challenges surrounding them and can make the most out of them as valuable learning opportunities. Drawings, icons, photographs, maps and calendars are incorporated into the tool-kit while they are being used in circumstances in which they are required: children appropriate them while exposed to their use and experience their affordances. Children realize how the graphic texts empower their performance. The fact that this toolkit is multimodal (involves several sensory modalities) implies that those for whom language is not the most readily available means of communication and processing are not discriminated against: on the one hand, it facilitates conceptualization and its expression by alternative means, and on the other it supports both the comprehension and production of verbal language.

The Psychology of Graphic Images

The Psychology of Graphic Images PDF Author: Manfredo Massironi
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 1135679363
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 501

Book Description
This book explores the nature of one of the most ancient tools for nonverbal communication: drawings. They are naturally adaptable enough to meet an incredibly wide range of communication needs. But how exactly do they do their job so well? Avoiding the kinds of aesthetic rankings of different graphic domains so often made by art historians and critics, Manfredo Massironi considers an extensive and representative sample of graphic applications with an open mind. He finds a deep mutuality between the material components of images and the activation of the perceptual and cognitive processes that create and decipher them. Massironi first examines the material components themselves: the mark or line, the plane of representation (the angle formed by the actual drawing surface and the depicted objects), and the position of the viewpoint relative to the depicted objects. The roles played by these three components are independent of the content of the drawing; they function in the same way in concrete and abstract representations. He then closely scrutinizes the choices made by the person planning and executing the drawings. Given that any object can be depicted in an infinite number of different ways, the drawer performs continuous work emphasizing and excluding different features. The choices are typically unconscious and guided by his or her communicative goals. A successful graph, be it simple or complex, is always successful precisely because the emphasized features are far fewer in number than the excluded ones. Finally, he analyzes the perceptual and cognitive integrations made by the viewer. Drawings are not simply tools for communication but important instruments for investigating reality and its structure. Richly illustrated, the book includes a series of graphic exercises that enable readers to get a sense of their own perceptual and cognitive activity when inspecting images. Massironi's pathbreaking taxonomy of graphic productions will illuminate all the processes involved in producing and understanding graphic images for a wide audience, in fields ranging from perceptual and cognitive psychology through human factors and graphic design to architecture and art history.

Sceno-graphic Techniques

Sceno-graphic Techniques PDF Author: Wilford Oren Parker
Publisher: SIU Press
ISBN: 9780809313501
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
The first book to bring together the drafting techniques, descriptive geometry, engineering drawing, and graphics of perspective needed to plan and execute a setting for the theatre. Parker presents these elements in a logical three-part format. "The Language of Lines" offers a study of drafting techniques, conventions, and symbols peculiar to the theatre; "Graphic Solutions" deals with the graphic problem-solving often needed to draw and make the frequent irregular forms of present-day scene design; and "Perspective in the Theatre" treats the two-dimensional perspective of the designer's sketch and the three-dimensional perspective required for an illusion or stylistic concept.
