Silane Coupling Agents

Silane Coupling Agents PDF Author: Edwin P. Plueddemann
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489903429
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 238

Book Description
* It has been rumored that a bumble bee has such aerodynamic deficiencies that it should be incapable of flight. Fiberglass-reinforced polymer com posites, similarly, have two (apparently) insurmountable obstacles to per formance: 1) Water can hydrolyze any conceivable bond between organic and inorganic phase, and 2) Stresses across the interface during temperature cycling (resulting from a mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients) may exceed the strength of one of the phases. Organofunctional silanes are hybrid organic-inorganic compounds that are used as coupling agents across the organic-inorganic interface to help overcome these two obstacles to composite performance. One of their functions is to use the hydrolytic action of water under equilibrium condi tions to relieve thermally induced stresses across the interface. If equilib rium conditions can be maintained, the two problems act to cancel each other out. Coupling agents are defined primarily as materials that improve the practical adhesive bond of polymer to mineral. This may involve an increase in true adhesion, but it may also involve improved wetting, rheology, and other handling properties. The coupling agent may also modify the inter phase region to strengthen the organic and inorganic boundary layers.

Physical Processes in Earth and Environmental Sciences

Physical Processes in Earth and Environmental Sciences PDF Author: Mike R. Leeder
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1444311115
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
This book provides a sound introduction to the basic physicalprocesses that dominate the workings of the Earth, its atmosphereand hydrosphere. It systematically introduces the physicalprocesses involved in the Earth’s systems without assuming anadvanced physics or mathematical background. Offers an integrated approach to the study of earth, marine andatmospheric environmental sciences, reflecting current trends inundergraduate courses. Natural examples of physical processes, rather than abstractphysics and maths, are used throughout to illustrate the scientificprinciples involved. Artwork from the book is available to instructors online atwww.blackwellpublishing.com/leeder.

Practical Handbook of Material Flow Analysis

Practical Handbook of Material Flow Analysis PDF Author: Paul H. Brunner
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0203507207
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
The first-ever book on this subject establishes a rigid, transparent and useful methodology for investigating the material metabolism of anthropogenic systems. Using Material Flow Analysis (MFA), the main sources, flows, stocks, and emissions of man-made and natural materials can be determined. By demonstrating the application of MFA, this book reveals how resources can be conserved and the environment protected within complex systems. The fourteen case studies presented exemplify the potential for MFA to contribute to sustainable materials management. Exercises throughout the book deepen comprehension and expertise. The authors have had success in applying MFA to various fields, and now promote the use of MFA so that future engineers and planners have a common method for solving resource-oriented problems.

The Book of Equanimity

The Book of Equanimity PDF Author: Gerry Shishin Wick
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 086171802X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
The Book of Equanimity contains the first-ever complete English language commentary on one of the most beloved classic collections of Zen teaching stories (koans), making them vividly relevant to spiritual seekers and Zen students in the twenty-first century. Continually emphasizing koans as effective tools to discover and experience the deepest truths of our being, Wick brings the art of the koan to life for those who want to practice wisdom in their daily lives. The koan collection Wick explores here is highly esteemed as both literature and training material in the Zen tradition, in which koan-study is one of two paths a practitioner might take. This collection is used for training in many Zen centers in the Americas and in Europe but has never before been available with commentary from a contemporary Zen master. Wick's Book of Equanimity includes new translations of the preface, main case and verse for each koan, and modern commentaries on the koans by Wick himself.

Root Ecology

Root Ecology PDF Author: Hans de Kroon
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9783540001850
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
In the course of evolution, a great variety of root systems have learned to overcome the many physical, biochemical and biological problems brought about by soil. This development has made them a fascinating object of scientific study. This volume gives an overview of how roots have adapted to the soil environment and which roles they play in the soil ecosystem. The text describes the form and function of roots, their temporal and spatial distribution, and their turnover rate in various ecosystems. Subsequently, a physiological background is provided for basic functions, such as carbon acquisition, water and solute movement, and for their responses to three major abiotic stresses, i.e. hard soil structure, drought and flooding. The volume concludes with the interactions of roots with other organisms of the complex soil ecosystem, including symbiosis, competition, and the function of roots as a food source.

Karst Hydrogeology and Geomorphology

Karst Hydrogeology and Geomorphology PDF Author: Derek Ford
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1118684990
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 581

Book Description
Originally published in 1989, Karst Geomorphology and Hydrology became the leading textbook on karst studies. This new textbook has been substantially revised and updated. The first half of the book is a systematic presentation of the dissolution kinetics, chemical equilibria and physical flow laws relating to karst environments. It includes details of the many environmental factors that complicate their chemical evolution, with a critique of measurement of karst erosion rates. The second half of the book looks at the classification system for cave systems and the influence of climate and climatic change on karst development. The book ends with chapters on karst water resource management and a look at the important issues of environmental management, including environmental impact assessment, environmental rehabilitation, tourism impacts and conservation values. Practical application of karst studies are explained throughout the text. "This new edition strengthens the book's position as the essential reference in the field. Karst geoscientists will not dare to stray beyond arm's reach of this volume. It is certain to remain the professional standard for many decades." Journal of Cave and Karst Studies, August 2007
