Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ...his especial mission was to stir up partisan hatred, and attack their favorite institution. While this charge was emphatically denied both by the reverend gentleman and the church, the denial did not satisfy the pro-slavery men, a number of whom, upon one occasion, forbade him attempting to fill his regular appointment. This, of course, aroused considerable feeling, and in the melee which followed, an old gentleman by the name of Holland, in attempting to interpose in behalf of the minister, was shot and killed by the mob. Mr. Sellers was then seized by the crowd, and subjected to many indignities, among which was a coat of tar administered to his face, head, neck, and other parts of the body. After satisfying their vengeance in this cruel manner, the mob compelled their victim to mount his horse and leave at once, on pain of immediate death. The minister, as may be supposed, lost no time in leaving the place, and, falling into the hands of friends a few miles from the village, was kindly cared for until able to leave the country. His sufferings under the terrible ordeal were intense, and it is said that he never entirely recovered from the efiects of his cruel treatment. This transaction, while severely condemned by all peaceably disposed people, served to intensify the already bitter partisan feeling throughout Andrew and neighboring counties, and for several months thereafter it was the fruitful source, not only of local disturbances, but of newspaper comments throughout the State as well. In the fall of 1856 occurred another melee at Rochester, growing out of a political difference, in which Samuel Simmons, a pro-slavery man, was killed by William Hardesty. This book is a thorough study of all known guerrilla operations in Civil War Missouri between September 1864 and June 1865. It explores different tactics each side attempted to gain advantage over each other, with regional differences as influenced by the personalities of local commanders. The author utilizes both well-known and obscure sources (including military and government records, private accounts, county and other local histories, period and later newspapers, and secondary sources published after the war) to identify which Southern partisan leaders and groups operated in which areas of Missouri, and how their kinds of warfare evolved. This work presents the actions of Southern guerrilla forces and Confederate behind-Union-lines recruiters chronologically by region so that readers may see the relationship of seemingly isolated events to other events. The book also studies the counteractions of an array of different types of Union troops fighting guerrillas in Missouri to show how differences in training, leadership and experience affected actions in the field.
