Before Mandela's Rainbow
Author: Edward Joffe
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1491892080
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 239
Book Description
FUNNIER THAN ADRIAN MOLE AND FAR SEXIER! Does not skirt round the vast injustice of apartheid SUPERB MEMOIR Joffe is a man sui generis. Impish at times, but always interesting. Memorable and well written! AN INTIMATE, FUNNY, AND PROFOUND PERSONAL HISTORY Reading this funny, clever, sometimes vicious portrayal of growing up in Johannesburg in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, I found myself reminded of Blakes line To see a world in a grain of sand. This is because Joffe, in writing a detailed and often very amusing account of his personal adventures and misadventures, captures also the texture of the broader environment, the brutal decades of racist horror of his native land. Joffe relates events with the engaging rhythm of all great story tellers - there are villains like sadistic teachers and fatuous fathers-in-law, there are lost adolescents in pursuit of sex and meaning, there are coming of age crises and triumphs, and an almost Dickensian host of memorable, often quirky, family members and friends. Read it, and you will see what I mean. Read it and youll laugh frequently. Read it and youll better understand the last 80 years of South African history. BRILLIANT MEMOIR Fascinating portrait of life in pre-Mandela South Africa, packed with very fine vignettes. A page-turning account of adolescence and the pains of growing up. Heartfruit
Author: Ingrid Wolfaardt
Publisher: Human & Rosseau
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 468
Book Description
Heartfruit is both a sweeping saga and a revisionist "farm novel". It traces the story of a South African fruit farm and the farm's transition from a traditional white-held ownership to a new dispensation of collective ownership (where the traditional roles of worker and landowner are redefined) and explores the economic relationships and legal issues surrounding farming and the export of fruit from South Africa. The story stretches from the 1970's to approximately the turn of the 20th century. The novel begins with Izak, the main male protagonist, a fruit farmer travelling in Europe in search of funding and new markets, here at the end of the 1990's. The latter half of this decade has seen the opening up of trade for individual growers and agents in South Africa to access international markets, without governmental control through the old Marketing Board system. He has an accident in the home of his estranged brother in Holland, whereby he lands up in hospital. Here he has time to reflect and consider his private history as well as his future and the fragile prospects of the new farm structure he has implemented. In essence the novel speaks of a broader human experience of loss and guilt as well as the struggle to reach out and build relationships. The title of the novel is derived from the common name of the tree Hymenocardia acida, which is a tree indigenous to Southern Africa. The fruit of the tree is in the shape of a deeply indented heart, turning red and conspicuous when mature. In African culture, the fresh leaves, which are also believed to have medicinal qualities, are placed in the roof of a house to protect it from lightning. HeartFruit is an enchanting, gripping novel by an exciting new author.

Book Description
Southern Rhodesia, Central Africa: March, 1914. A trooper of police, sent to contain a lawless settlement near Bulawayo, the countrys largest city, told on his arrival there that all the violence was caused by government restrictions (not true) took them at their word and made a single, simple rule, No one may initiate the use of force, including me simple, because to him it was no more than a policemans job. Common Law would be upheld, he said (robbery, rape, fraud etc.): Statute Law (restrictions) wouldnt. If they obeyed it, so would he: that was the deal, and his grim reputation needed only to be tested once. After this he withdrew and let them all get on with their affairs. He was thought to be from the American Far West; and his rule being based upon a moral principle, initiating force is wrong, which cant be circumvented by the Law, police, politics, or even at the will of a majority, with taxes and legislation set aside and everything done willy-nilly by agreement, not by vote, sure enough and right away Queenstown became like one in the American Far West: a free society. But with this difference: no force eliminated anything to do with government. Question: But how can a society exist, let alone succeed, without a government? Answer: This is what the book is all about.
