Book Description
Excerpt from The Good Hand of Our God Upon Us: A Thanksgiving Sermon, Preached on Occasion of the Victory of Manassas, July 21st, 1861, in the Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, Va In the first published official account of the first important battle of this war, the battle of Bethel, brigadier-general Hill concludes with the words: Our Heavenly Father has wonderfully interposed to shield our heads in the day of bat tle. Unto His name be all the praise for our success. There isa heartiness in the recognition of God's good hand in these words, which make this dispatch unlike any other official dispatch from a battle field I have ever read. Book Description
Excerpt from God's Marvellous Doing for the Nation: A Sermon, Preached on the Day Appointed by the President for National Thanksgiving and Prayer, in the Church of the Epiphany, Philadelphia This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. -psalm cxviii. 23. The Psalm in which our text is found, is what is called a Messianic Psalm. All its utterances refer to Christ. The marvellous doing here spoken of, has reference to the great work of man's redemption, wrought out by our glorious Saviour. Of this, it may with truth be said, that it is the Lord's doing. The design of it is his. The execution of it is his. The results of it are his. And this doing of the Lord is indeed marvellous. In the magnitude of its blessings, it is marvellous. In the extent to which these blessings reach, both as to the number who are to share in them, and as to the period of their duration, the work which secures them, is marvellous. And it is marvel lous, too, in the'.gracious manner in which these blessings are bestowed on the needy and perishing children of men. This is the true and primary sense in which the words of our text should be taken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. God's Mercies Towards the Nation

God's Mercies Towards the Nation PDF Author: Morgan Dix

Book Description
Excerpt from God's Mercies Towards the Nation: A Sermon Preached in St. Paul's Chapel, New York, Thanksgiving Day, 1861 How long is it, brethren, since last we kept Thanksgiving Day? How long, how much have we lived meanwhile? Yon talk of a twelvemonth; but do you not rather mean twelve years? Have these been only months through which we have been passing? Is it but one short year since, as a united people, we gave God thanks for all the blessings of His merciful providence? Is it but seven months since the first gun broke the dream, since the first shot tore through the line of the nations quiet and peaceable progress? It seems as though one had lived half a century, at least, in this short space. It seems as though, since last Thanksgiving, our world had been turned upside down. We have kept two national fasts; we have come through fire and water; we have been called to the royal heritage of sorrow; we have been taught as if by briers and thorns; we have drained the cup of humiliation in stern, sad silence. One need not be ashamed to confess to days of concentrated bitterness of soul and spirit as known to him, but too well, in these months just gone.
