Book Description
This book brings together contributions from researchers, GIS professionals and game designers to provide a first overview of this highly interdisciplinary field. Its scope ranges from fundamentals about games and play, geographic information technologies, game design and culture, to current examples and forward looking analysis. Of interest to anyone interested in creating and using Geogames, this volume serves as a channel for sharing early experiences, discussing technological challenges and solutions, and outlines a future research agenda. Games and play are part of human life, and in many game activities, place, space and geography plays a central role in determining the rules and interactions that are characteristic of each game. Recent developments and widespread access to mobile information, communication, and geospatial technologies have spurred a flurry of developments, including many variations of gaming activities that are situated in, or otherwise connected to the real world.

From Specification to Embedded Systems Application
Author: Achim Rettberg
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0387275592
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 331
Book Description
As almost no other technology, embedded systems is an essential element of many innovations in automotive engineering. New functions and improvements of already existing functions, as well as the compliance with traffic regulations and customer requirements, have only become possible by the increasing use of electronic systems, especially in the fields of driving, safety, reliability, and functionality. Along with the functionalities that increase in number and have to cooperate, the complexity of the entire system will increase. Synergy effects resulting from distributed application functionalities via several electronic control devies, exchanging information through the network brings about more complex system architectures with many different sub-networks, operating with different velocities and different protocol implementations. To manage the increasing complexity of these systems, a deterministic behaviour of the control units and the communication network must be provided for, in particular when dealing with a distributed functionality. From Specification to Embedded Systems Application documents recent approaches and results presented at the International Embedded Systems Symposium (IESS 2005), which was held in August 2005 in Manaus (Brazil) and sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The topics which have been chosen for this working conference are very timely: design methodology, modeling, specification, software synthesis, power management, formal verification, testing, network, communication systems, distributed control systems, resource management and special aspects in system design.

Groupware: Design, Implementation, and Use
Author: Jesus Favela
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540398503
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 393
Book Description
This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on Groupware (CRIWG 2003). The conference was held in the city of Autrans, on the spectacular Vercors plateau in the foothills of the French Alps. The or- nizing committee could not have thought of a better setting to inspire lively discussions and re?ection on open issues facing the ?eld of groupware. The CRIWG workshops have been motivated by advances in Computer- Supported Cooperative Work, and by the need for CSCW to meet the challenges of new application areas. With this ninth meeting, CRIWG aimed to provide a forum for academic researchers and professionals to exchange their experiences and ideas about problems and solutions related to the design, development, and use of groupware applications. The selection of papers followed a strict refereeing process by a renowned international committee. We received 84 contributions with ?rst authors from 21 di?erent countries, from which 30 papers were selected to be presented and published in this proceedings volume. The papers in these proceedings include 18longpaperspresentingmatureworkand12shortpapersdescribingpromising work in progress in the ?eld. We thank all members of the Program Committee for their valuable reviews of the papers. In addition, we were pleased to have as invited speaker Prof. Saul Greenberg from the University of Calgary in Canada, a renowned specialist in Groupware and HCI. An extended abstract of his lecture is included in these proceedings.

Mathematics and War
Author: Bernhelm Booß-Bavnbek
Publisher: Birkhäuser
ISBN: 3034880936
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 418
Book Description
Mathematics has for centuries been stimulated, financed and credited by military purposes. Some mathematical thoughts and mathematical technology have also been vital in war. During World War II mathematical work by the Anti-Hitler coalition was part of an aspiration to serve humanity and not help destroy it. At present, it is not an easy task to view the bellicose potentials of mathematics in a proper perspective. The book presents historical evidence and recent changes in the interaction between mathematics and the military. It discusses the new mathematically enhanced development of military technology which seems to have changed the very character of modern warfare.

Virtual Screening: An Alternative or Complement to High Throughput Screening?
Author: Gerhard Klebe
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0306468832
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 301
Book Description
In the next couple of years the human genome will be fully sequenced. This will provide us with the sequence and overall function of all human genes as well as the complete genome for many micro-organisms. Subsequently it is hoped, by means of powerful bioinformatic tools, to determine the gene variants that contribute to various multifactorial diseases and genes that exist in certain infectious agents but not humans. As a consequence, this will allow us to define the most appropriate levels for drug intervention. It can be expected that the number of potential drug targets will increase, possibly by a factor of 10 or more. Nevertheless, sequencing the human genome or, for that matter, the genome of other species will only be the starting point for the understanding of their biological function. Structural genomics is a likely follow-up, combined with new techniques to validate the therapeutic relevance of such newly discovered targets. Accordingly, it can be expected that in the near future we will witness a substantial increase in novel putative targets for drugs. To address these new targets effectively, we require new approaches and innovative tools. At present, two alternative, yet complementary, techniques are employed: experimental high-throughput screening (HTS) of large compound libraries, increasingly provided by combinatorial chemistry, and computational methods for virtual screening and de novo design. As kind of status report on the maturity of virtual screening as a technique in drug design, the first workshop on new approaches in drug design and discovery was held in March 1999, at Schloß Rauischholzhausen, near Marburg in Germany. More than 80 scientists gathered and discussed their experience with the different techniques. The speakers were invited to summarize their contributions together with their impressions on the present applicability of their approach. Several of the speakers followed this request which is summarized in this publication.
