Glycolipids, Phosphoglycolipids, and Sulfoglycolipids

Glycolipids, Phosphoglycolipids, and Sulfoglycolipids PDF Author: Morris Kates

Book Description
The early history and development of the field of glycolipids was concerned mainly with the predominant glycolipids found in higher animal tissues, namely the glycosphingolipids, as has been extensively documented by J. N. Kanfer and S. Hakomori in Volume 3 of this series. The major glycolipids in organisms of the plant kingdom, however, such as bacteria, yeasts and fungi, algae, and higher plants, are glycoglycerolipids, although glycosphingolipids are also present as minor components in these organisms, except for bacteria. It is of interest that one of the pioneers in glycosphingolipid research, Herbert E. Carter, also pioneered the discovery and structural elucidation of the plant galactosyldiacylglycerols. This class of glycolipids is present in chlo roplast membranes and must surely be one of the most ubiquitous and abun dant natural substances in the world, thereby deserving the attention of lipid biochemists. It is therefore surprising to learn that in contrast to the glycosphingolipids, which were discovered in the 1870s, glycoglycerolipids were not discovered until the 1950s. Since that time investigations of the structure and distribution of these glycolipids have proceeded at an exponen tially increasing rate, and much information is now available for representa tives of many genera of bacteria, yeasts, algae, and higher plants. Glycoglyce rolipids have also been identified in animal cells, particularly in the brain, testes, and sperm.

Glycolipids

Glycolipids PDF Author: Daiki Sasaki
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN:
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 222

Book Description
Glycolipids are carbohydrate-attached lipids. Their role is to provide energy and also serve as markers for cellular recognition. They occur where a carbohydrate chain is associated with phospholipids on the exoplasmic surface of the cell membrane. The carbohydrates are found on the outer surface of all eukaryotic cell membranes. They extend from the phospholipid bilayer into the aqueous environment outside the cell where it acts as a recognition site for specific chemicals as well as helping to maintain the stability of the membrane and attaching cells to one another to form tissues. This new book focuses on recent research results from around the world.

Book Description
Lipidomics is the study of the lipid molecules that are found in animal, plant, and bacterial cells. Recent research in this field has been driven by the development of sensitive new mass spectrometric tools and protocols, leading to the identification and quantification of thousands of lipids and their roles in metabolic processes.Designed for stu

Lipid Polymorphism and Membrane Properties

Lipid Polymorphism and Membrane Properties PDF Author:
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0080585159
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 590

Book Description
The major lipid components of biological membranes can undergo many diverse and fascinating morphological rearrangements. Studies of these diverse phases and the manner in which they are formed tends to alter the properties of ordinary bilayer membranes. This book examines the structural and biological roles of lipids forming non-lamellar structures. Key Features* Characterization of non-lamellar structures * Protein activity and membrane properties* Analysis of membrane fusion* Affect of non-lamellar forming lipids on biological systems

It places a stronger emphasis on the nutritional, medical, and agricultural aspects of lipids to reflect the increased interest and research in these areas in the past 10 years and beyond. This edition features updated chapters and expanded coverage, including additional compounds to its dictionary. Written by experts from a diverse range of fields, many of whom have contributed new research in the areas under review, this handbook remains an essential reference.

Plant Cell Biology

Plant Cell Biology PDF Author: William V Dashek
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1482294494
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 507

Book Description
While there are a few plant cell biology books that are currently available, these are expensive, methods-oriented monographs. The present volume is a textbook for upper undergraduate and beginning graduate students. This textbook stresses concepts and is inquiry-oriented. To this end, there is extensive use of original research literature. As we live in an era of literature explosion, one must be selective. These judgements will naturally vary with each investigator. Input was sought from colleagues in deciding the literature to include. In addition to provision of select research literature, this volume presents citations and summaries of certain laboratory methods. In this connection, the textbook stresses quantitative data to enhance the student?s analytical abilities. Thus the volume contains computer-spread sheets and references to statistical packages, e.g. Harvard Graphics and Statistica.

Lipid Second Messengers

Lipid Second Messengers PDF Author: Robert M. Bell
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1489913610
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
Lipids traditionally have been viewed as serving two functions: to form cellular membranes and to serve as energy stores. During the last two decades, a new role for lipids has taken center stage: lipids can act as signalling molecules. This book deals with a variety of lipids that have been shown to be messengers. Leading scientists explore all known lipid classes except steroid hormones. Researchers and educators in biochemistry as well as in molecular and cellular biology will appreciate this volume.

Lipid Metabolism in Plants

Lipid Metabolism in Plants PDF Author: Thomas S. Moore
