The Gloves

The Gloves PDF Author: Michael Silano
Publisher: Fulton Books, Inc.
ISBN: 1639850120
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Based on actual events, The Gloves starts as a love story between a mother and her four daughters. She was the thumb, and her girls were the other fingers--a hand if you may. The year was 1910 when my grandfather immigrated from Italy and joined a Hell's Kitchen mob soon after. In 1925, he met an innocent girl from New Jersey who wrongly crossed a legendary block in midtown Manhattan and wound up outside a speakeasy. They would marry, but the Great Depression, Pearl Harbor, and the ensuing War would change their lives forever. The story of her four daughters growing up in Brooklyn unfolds with equal measures of grace and tragedy, as life grants and takes away its greatest gifts over the years. The oldest daughter would marry first. Her husband would win the Silver Star for bravery during WWII, and his brother would come within one boxing match of challenging Joe Louis for the world title. The other daughters' lives would take different paths. All had families of their own as the tides of life ebb and flow. In 1990, Hollywood would write about one such incident in an Academy Award-winning movie loosely based on fact and fiction. Time transcends over five generations as we learn about loyalty and betrayal, joy and sadness while struggling through dyslexia and autism. Read about all sorts of mayhem and murder. Plus, alcohol and drugs, gambling, bookmaking, and racketeering. The Gloves starts as a tribute to a remarkable and selfless life. That life belonged to my mother, as she was one of the four daughters. It continues, however, as an autobiography of one not so gifted.

Category Mistakes

Category Mistakes PDF Author: Ofra Magidor
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191662844
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
Category mistakes are sentences such as 'Green ideas sleep furiously', 'Saturday is in bed', and 'The theory of relativity is eating breakfast'. Such sentences strike most speakers as highly infelicitous but it is a challenge to explain precisely why they are so. Ofra Magidor addresses this challenge, while providing a comprehensive discussion of the various treatments of category mistakes in both philosophy of language and linguistics. The phenomenon of category mistakes is particularly interesting to both these fields because a plausible case can be (and has been) made for explaining it in terms of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics—making it a fruitful case for exploring the relations between and nature of these three fundamental realms of language. Category Mistakes follows this division. After an introduction which explains the aims and motivations for the project and provides a brief historical survey of the (modern) treatment of category mistakes in each of philosophy, linguistics, and computer science, Magidor discusses four approaches in turn: first, the syntactic approach, which maintains that category mistakes are syntactically ill-formed; then two semantic approaches, though ones that appeal to different semantic facets: the meaninglessness view, which maintains that category mistakes are meaningless, and the MBT view, according to which category mistakes are meaningful but truth-valueless; and finally the pragmatic approach, according to which category mistakes are syntactically well-formed, meaningful, truth-valued but nevertheless pragmatically inappropriate. Magidor argues that the first three approaches ought to be rejected, and in the final chapter addresses the main challenge by developing and defending a particular version of the pragmatic approach: a presuppositional account of category mistakes.

A PETTICOAT AND LAMBSKIN GLOVES

A PETTICOAT AND LAMBSKIN GLOVES PDF Author: Marilyn Clay
Publisher: The Regency Plume Press
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 418

Book Description
In 1620 four young English girls—Diana, Sallie Mae, Faith, and Prudence—strangers to one another and each hiding secrets, board a Bride Ship in England bound for the New World. Seeking love, husbands, and the adventure of a lifetime, the girls are instead swept into a maelstrom of lies, treachery, and deceit. Upon arriving in Jamestown, they are shocked to discover that someone in the colony wants one, or all of them, dead. Diana bravely sets aside her grief to unravel the mystery before the killer strikes again. When all clues point to the most likeable and highly respected Jamestown colonist, Diana knows that here in the New World, where women must remain silent and submissive, no one will believe her. Yet as she uncovers long-hidden secrets, she knows that saying nothing makes her part of the lie. When charges of witchcraft are leveled against one of the girls, Diana boldly speaks out in her defense. Despite the turmoil in their lives, each girl still longs for love, a husband, and a new life. With the lies and treachery spinning out of control, the final shocking event stuns the entire colony. Will every secret now come to light? Or are the most horrific best left buried? Major characters from Marilyn Clay’s DECEPTIONS—Catherine, Phyrahawque, Noah, and Adam—contribute to this suspenseful tale of intrigue, romance, and adventure in the New World. Rich with historical detail, fast-paced and brimming with unexpected twists and turns, A PETTICOAT AND LAMBSKIN GLOVES (originally published in hardcover as SECRETS AND LIES) will keep readers guessing until the final page. “Not only was the plot extremely interesting and lived up to the ‘hype’ that’s still out there for witches and wizards of the 1600’s, some of the characters from Marilyn Clay’s previous Jamestown novel DECEPTIONS make an appearance, which added to the entertainment. The changes and plot twists keep readers on their toes, and will have mystery and history lovers running to Amazon and their local libraries for this one! Stay alert, because this plot holds your attention until the very last page.” - ONCE UPON A ROMANCE "Reading A PETTICOAT AND LAMBSKIN GLOVES is like stepping through a doorway into history. Marilyn Clay has done an incredible amount of research into the period, how it would look and smell and feel if you were truly in 1620s Jamestown. The romances are sweet, touching and period appropriate. A PETTICOAT AND LAMBSKIN GLOVES is the kind of book you want to get lost in and are sad when it’s over. Thoroughly recommended." -Janis May, author. "I won this book in a contest from the author, with no obligation to give a review. But I must. I've been to Jamestown, researched the early settlers and walked that same plot of ground. This story is so real . . . all my knowledge fit with the people, scenes and events. The story depicts the hardships of the people of the times when they embark to a new land full of unexpected rewards and grave disappointments. Sallie Mae is one of the strongest characters and deserves her ending. Prudence surprised me with what she did in a moment of weakness. Faith’s life was changed by the actions of her sister. The culmination of her deeds also surprised me and showed what can happen as we are affected by the actions of those we hold dear. This is historical fiction – some of the best I’ve read. I am thrilled! Marilyn Clay is an author to follow. 5 Stars. Highly recommended." - Mary Deal MARILYN CLAY has also authored the new, critically acclaimed Regency-set Miss Juliette Abbott Mystery Series with clever, young Miss Juliette Abbott as the amateur sleuth. Titles include MURDER AT MORLAND MANOR, MURDER IN MAYFAIR MURDER IN MARGATE, MURDER AT MEDLEY PARK, MURDER IN MIDDLEWYCH, MURDER IN MAIDSTSONE, MURDER AT MONTFORD HALL, MURDER ON MARSH LANE, MURDER IN MARTINDALE and MURDER AT MARLEY CHASE (coming in late 2022) All of Marilyn Clay's Juliette Abbott Regency Mysteries are clean, wholesome and suitable for teen readers. MARILYN CLAY has also written seven Regency Romance Novels, all previously published in print and now available as e-books; as is BETSY ROSS: ACCIDENTAL SPY, a colonial American Revolutionary-war suspense thriller and STALKING A KILLER, a contemporary mystery set near Dallas, Texas. Both books are also available in print. For more information visit, Marilyn Clay Author.
