Book Description
Excerpt from Views and Notices of Glasgow in Former Times Beyond the gateway in the view, may be observed the upper part of what is said to have been the Custom-house, or place where the town's dues were collected, to which we shall, in another part of the volume, have occasion to refer. Farther to the left are seen the trees whose waving foliage overshadowed the once favourite promenade of the earliest public park possessed by the inhabitants. It stood between Stockwell and Jamaica streets; and till within the last sixty or seventy years, was a very fashionable place of resort. In an opposite direction, the town is observed stretching to the eastward; the houses on the site of the present shambles and their noxious vicinity, intermingled with trees, and separated from the river by a low stone wall. Where the Molendinar joins the Clyde a little haven seems to have been formed for the reception of small boats; this, with the grass-covered banks adjoining, and the few little shallops floating in the stream, gives an air of quiet simplicity to the picture, that from a present glance at the spot it would indeed be difficult for the imagination to realize. Excerpt from Libraries of Glasgow The ardent love of books has been called madness, and a word invented to describe it, and indeed if every deviation from the beaten track be madness in degree, as has been said, then is the love of books truly mad ness, for the ways of the bookhunter are eccentric, as the pursuit of his study is delightful. Old Glasgow Weavers

Old Glasgow Weavers PDF Author: Rob; D. McEwan

Pages : 242

Book Description
Excerpt from Old Glasgow Weavers: Being Records of the Incorporation of Weavers; With Eight Illustrations The matter available has not been such as to make a continuous record possible. For facility of reference it has been thought advisable to classify the extracts, necessarily somewhat arbitrarily, in Chapters, and to dispense with a detailed Index. With few exceptions the extracts have, in each chapter, been arranged chronologically. The Minute and other Books now awanting were first missed in 1849, as is shown in an acknowledgment then granted by a new clerk for other books. The writer desires to acknowledge much kindly help received especially from the Clerk, Mr. C. J. MacLean; and from Mr. Robert Renwick, Depute Town Clerk of the City. Literary Landmarks of Glasgow (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: James A. Kilpatrick

Book Description
Excerpt from Literary Landmarks of Glasgow This book has been to me, in a very special sense, a labour of love, and came about in a curious way. It sprang, oddly enough, out of a challenge to discover a literary history of Glasgow, and in a weak moment I took up the gauntlet. At first my researches were not inspiriting, but as I persevered the subject broadened, and one eminent name after another came into view. I haunted the libraries, finding clues to the missing authors in biographies, reminiscences, dusty records, and still more dusty newspaper files, and the material ultimately increased to such dimensions that I trembled lest, like poor Philoxene Boyer, who set himself the tremendous task of overtaking everything that had been written about Shakespeare, I might never get beyond the reading. However, the end came when I had read over a thousand books, and sacrificed the leisure of four busy years.
