Book Description
Excerpt from Glimpses of an Improved Medical Philosophy Q l. The following work, glimpses or AN improved medical philosophy, is not published under an impression that it will meet with much favor from either the literary, philosophical, or medical world: it 18 more likely to meet just a contrary reception. I am well aware that the rules of inductive philosophy are most unmercifully violated; and that received doctrines, sanctioned by the very highest authority, are very strangely disregarded: but the case requires all this. To unlearn is more difficult, in many ih stances. Than to learn; and in proportion as error is supported by high authority, the less willing will be those who have labored zealously to acquire those erroneous notions, to canvass the plalislblllly of con trary Opinions. The Relation of Medicine to Philosophy (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Robert Oswald Moon

Book Description
Excerpt from The Relation of Medicine to Philosophy That the progress of medical science has enor mously reduced the death-rate no one can possibly deny. The cry occasionally heard, that there is a vast increase in diseases which were never heard of before, is purely absurd; this increase of disease is merely increase in the differentiation of disease. Because at one time the word fever served to cover almost every affection in which the pulse and respiration were quickened and the skin hot, the sum total of disease has not been increased by giving different names to the various fevers. To take a more techni cal instance, the disease of the nervous system called Disseminated Sclerosis will almost undoubtedly be divided up with increasing knowledge into several diseases of the spinal cord, but the sum total of diseases will not be larger. There is, however, just this much truth in the outcry, that as man's life has become more complex with advancing civilisation, so the possibility of minor oscillations from complete adjustment to the environment becomes increasingly great; it is more difficult to be perfectly healthy, because a higher standard of health is required by modern life. This is particularly seen in the case of insanity for civilisation, by increasing the number of social and moral rules to be observed, increases the possibility of their infraction. Book Description
Excerpt from The Philosophy of Physiomedicalism: Its Theorem, Corollary, and Laws of Application for the Cure of Disease Again, the promises of clinical medicine, with its vast accumu lated mass of experimental therapeutic observations, has signally failed to give us even an approach to precision in therapeutic effect because we have simply an aggregation of abstract facts without syllogistic continuity, being devoid of legitimate premise in physio logical truisms. As, also, the resort to chemical philosophy, endeavoring to frame a chemico-therapy, in other words, assuming that the functional activities of the organism are due to chemical disintegration of the tissues, and on this false premise, reasoning that medicines act by chemical equations, giving in some unknow able way a functional result, if given by formulae, analagous to the synthetic results obtained in retorts and test tubes. Improved Theory and Practice of Medicine

Improved Theory and Practice of Medicine PDF Author: Alexander H. Davis
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484683111
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 390

Book Description
Excerpt from Improved Theory and Practice of Medicine: Deduced From Forty Years Successful Practice In the state Of health the various functions are executed in a regular and harmonious manner, and are intimately connected by consent or sympathy; but, if a morbific cause impresses the Organism, this harmonious condition is disturbed; a fresh series of actions results; and disorder supervenes. Physiolo gists have noticed in every living body an instinctive action an action Of the living principle, manifestly directing its Opera tions to the health, preservation, or reproduction Of a living frame, or of any part of it. This applies to the plant as well as to the animal. It is the mic mea'z'catrz'x naturw for and against which so much has been said; but which, if restricted to the Operation we have mentioned, can no more be denied than the existence which we know nothing except by its results. It is strikingly witnessed in the reparatory power exerted by living bodies after the receipt of an injury. If we tear a branch from a tree, we find that the injury done to the parent trunk is repaired by an action analogous to that set up by the animal whenever a wound is inflicted upon it.
