This volume of 18 papers describes the glacial-marine sedimentary environment in a variety of temporal and spatial settings. The volume's primary emphasis is the characteri zation of Quaternary glacial-marine sedimentation to show (1) the significant differences that exist between glacial marine environments in different geographic settings and (2) their resulting glacial-marine deposits and facies. Addi tionally, papers describing ancient glacial-marine environ ments are also presented to illustrate lithified analogs of the Quaternary deposits. With the Doctrine of Uniformitarianism in mind (the present is the key to the past), it is hoped that this volume will serve to expand the horizons of geologists working on the rock record, especially those whose primary criteria for recognition of ancient glacial-marine environments is the presence of dropstones in a finer-grained matrix. As the papers presented here show, diamictite is only one of many types of deposits that form in the glacial-marine sedimentary environment. Papers presented in this volume examine the Quaternary glacia1-marine sedimentary picture in subarctic Alaska, Antarctica, the Arctic Ocean, the Kane Basin, Baffin Island, the Puget-Fraser Lowland of Washington and British Columbia, and the North Atlantic Ocean. Ancient glacia1-marine depos its described are the Neogene Yakataga Formation of southern Alaska, the Late Paleozoic Dwyka Formation of the Karoo Basin of South Africa, and the Precambrian Mineral Fork Formation of Utah. For continuity, a paper summar1z1ng the temporal and spatial occurrences of glacial-marine deposits is also presented.

Late Cenozoic glaciation directly affected sedimentation on more than half the Earth's continental shelves. Ice continues to be a dominant influence on sedimentation around Greenland and Antarctica, and on the shelves facing the Arctic Ocean. The features of these shelves include true glacimarine features, i.e. those found in a marine environment in proximityto, or strongly under the influence of, ice, such as iceberg scours and pits, ice gouges and incisions, subglacial outwash deposits, and diamictons resulting from ice rafting. Also seen, because large areas of the shelves were exposed during the Pleistocene lowering of sea level, are terrestrial glacial and periglacial features, e.g. fluvial outwash valleys and associated deposits, tunnel valleys, drumlin fields and lodgement till, which have subsequently been submerged and modified by marine influences. Glaciated Continental Margins: An Atlas of Acoustic Images illustrates the complexity of features found in glaciated and formerly glaciated marine environments. The volume was assembled by an international Editorial Committee, led by Thomas A. Davies (University of Texas), from records gathered in the course of recent research and contributed by members of the scientific community from around the world. These include seismic sections, side-scan maps, and 3-D seismic data, supplemented in some cases by bottom photographs and core data, with accompanying text. Sediment drilling, using rigs located on sea ice inshore, and Ocean Drilling Program facilities farther offshore, have described the stepwise cooling of Antarctica through the Cenozoic, setting the scene for more detailed studies of short-period, recent change. Such studies will not be easy. The virtual absence of carbonate sediments and the strength of bottom currents in some regions are fundamental limitations. Nevertheless, Antarctic ocean sediments contain a record of global change which complements the record of the ice sheet, and extends it back in time. Pelagic and hemipelagic sediments of the ocean basins record changes in primary productivity, dissolution, sea ice extent and the strength of deep ocean circulation, and in the volume of the main circum-Antarctic water masses. Prograded sediments of the Antarctic continental shelf and slope contain a record of glacial/interglacial changes in ice sheet volume. Modern piston-coring techniques are capable of revealing changes over the last glacial cycle in some detail, in suitably expanded sections. At lower sediment accumulation rates, a less detailed but longer record can be obtained. It can already be shown that, at and around glacial maximum, (a) grounded ice sheets extended to the Antarctic continental shelf edge, (b) the marginal sea ice zone lay up to 5 deg farther north, and (c) Weddell Sea Bottom Water flow was far slower than at present.
