Defining Medievalism(s). PDF Author: Karl Fugelso

Pages : 320

Book Description
"A sequel to its predecessor, this volume of Studies in Medievalism further explores definitions of the field. In essays by seven leading medievalists, it seeks to determine precisely how we should characterize the subjects of our study, their relationship to new and related fields, such as neomedievalism, and their relevance to the Middle Ages, whose definition is itself a matter of debate." "The observations and conclusions of the essayists are tested in the volume's second section, which comprises eight articles on: the notion of progress over the last eighty or ninety years in our perception of the Middle Ages; medievalism in Gustave Dore's mid-nineteenth-century engravings of the Divine Comedy; the role of music in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films; cinematic representations of the Holy Grail; the medieval courtly love tradition in Jeanette Winterson's The Passion and The Powerbook; Eleanor of Aquitaine in twentieth-century histories; modern updates of the Seven Deadly Sins; and Victorian spins on Jacques de Voragine's Golden Legend."--Jacket.

Each week will explore one of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Virtue that combats it. Instead of focusing on the sin, this study focuses more on ways to effectively battle sin in our everyday lives. In addition to exploring a sin and virtue each week, there is a bonus section each week with a practical spiritual growth suggestion. This Bible study contains a chart to help you stay organized and helpful hints for a productive Bible study experience. Thorn Cross Ministries, LLC provides in-depth Christian Bible studies that use the Three STEP method. The 3 STEP method allows the reader to break down the material into three easy steps to fully appreciate the Scripture. In STEP 1, we look at the text and what it is saying. This is the most basic STEP. It is a good place for beginners to Bible study or for the more experienced to refresh them on the Scripture passage being discussed. STEP 2 examines the Scripture or topic in regards to tradition using The Catechism of the Catholic Church and other Scriptures. In STEP 3, the reader examines how this Scripture will change his/her life. What effect(s) will this Scripture have on a personal level?

Book Description
Unfortunately, to many people the word "sin" has lost its edge. We are more apt to hear about sin in reference to a piece of chocolate cake than in its true theological power. Understood biblically, sin is more than merely something that is "naughty but nice"; sin is a destructive pattern of life. It breaks our relationship with God, others, or ourselves. Reclaiming the word "sin" is the first step to reconciliation with God. When we recognize patterns as sinful, we recognize our own desperate need for the saving power of God in Jesus Christ. What exactly is sin? Just as we organize our cupboards and our schedules to make sense of our lives, Christian thinkers have organized sin into a number of categories in order to understand and surrender these patterns to God. The notion of "seven deadly sins" emerged as a way to recognize specific dangers to our spiritual lives. The origins of the list are unclear. Many scholars say that they emerged from a list of eight bad habits created by Evagrius of Pontus, a fourth-century Greek monastic theologian. Some 200 years later, Pope Gregory the Great reduced the list to seven while writing on the book of Job. Throughout the Bible, we read about the struggle between our sinful nature and God's desire to free us from bondage. In the book of Proverbs, we have an anthology of wisdom teachings. These collections were customarily attributed to King Solomon. Most biblical scholars now conclude that the title is honorary. The authors of Proverbs were the "sages, a social class that served as counselors, bureaucrats, and teachers during the Divided Kingdom and as preservers of tradition in the later periods" (Camp and Fontaine, 938). The purpose of the book is to guide people away from sin and into a wise and godly life.

The Seven Deadly Sins PDF Author: Angela Tilby

Book Description
Until recently little has been known about Evagrius of Pontus. His work on the eight evil thoughts was widely influential in the development of the idea of the Seven Deadly Sins in the Western Spiritual tradition. But those who followed him, from Cassian to Augustine, were more concerned with attributing guilt, and thought in a forensic way. This was very unlike the thought of Evagrius who concerned himself with questions about how to deal with evil thoughts and temptations in a healing way. Each chapter deals with one of the Thoughts, giving the contemporary background, the biblical and theological background, the teaching of Evagrius and what came after, and its relevance for us today.
