Ghosts, Memories & Masturbation in Vieux Carré

Ghosts, Memories & Masturbation in Vieux Carré PDF Author: Will Garrett Detlefsen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
Vieux Carré is about eight tragically lonely outsiders, vagrants and artists who find solace and support in one another's company. The play follows the journey of a young, gay writer searching for love and artistic inspiration in the people and environment around him. He is an observer, a seeker, a vampire. The Writer finds himself in the Vieux Carré of New Orleans and rents a room in a dilapidated boarding house filled with beautiful dying souls. It is there that he discovers himself as an artist and the power of empathy. At its core, Vieux Carré is a coming-of-age / coming-out story, which is why the research for this production truly began with my own personal coming-of-age / coming-out story. My production mentor and directing professor, Gabor Tompa, challenges his students to articulate a clear and deeply personal concept. Concept, as I have come to understand it, is about how my personal worldview is expressed through the themes, designs and situations of a specific production. My access into Vieux Carré was through the Writer, but in order to find the concept and the scenic language, I needed to first discover the analogy between his experience and my own. This is how the concept for my thesis production was born: What the Vieux Carré was for Tennessee Williams, the theatre was for me.

Vieux Carré

Vieux Carré PDF Author: Tennessee Williams
Publisher: New Directions Publishing
ISBN: 9780811214605
Category : Drama
Languages : en
Pages : 134

Book Description
Born out of the journals the playwright kept at the time, Tennessee Williams's Vieux Carre is not emotion recollected in tranquillity, but emotion re-created with all the pain, compassion, and wry humor of the playwright's own 1938-39 sojourn in the New Orleans French Quarter vividly intact. The drama takes its form from the shifting scenes of memory, and Williams's surrogate self invites us to focus, in turn, on the various inhabitants of his dilapidated rooming house in the Vieux Carre: the comically desperate landlady, Mrs. Wire; Jane, a properly brought-up young woman from New York making a last grab at pleasure with Tye, the vulgar but appealing strip-joint barker; two decayed gentlewomen politely starving in the garret; and the dying painter Nightingale, who tries to teach the young writer something about love -- both of the body and of the heart. This is a play about the education of the artist, an education in loneliness and despair, in giving and not giving, but most of all in seeing, hearing, feeling, and learning that "writers are shameless spies," who pay dearly for their knowledge and who cannot forget.

Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans

Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans PDF Author: Jeanne deLavigne
Publisher: LSU Press
ISBN: 0807152927
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 397

Book Description
“He struck a match to look at his watch. In the flare of the light they saw a young woman just at Pitot’s elbow—a young woman dressed all in black, with pale gold hair, and a baby sleeping on her shoulder. She glided to the edge of the bridge and stepped noiselessly off into the black waters.”—from Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans Ghosts are said to wander along the rooftops above New Orleans’ Royal Street, the dead allegedly sing sacred songs in St. Louis Cathedral, and the graveyard tomb of a wealthy madam reportedly glows bright red at night. Local lore about such supernatural sightings, as curated by Jeanne deLavigne in her classic Ghost Stories of Old New Orleans, finds the phantoms of bitter lovers, vengeful slaves, and menacing gypsies haunting nearly every corner of the city, from the streets of the French Quarter to Garden District mansions. Originally printed in 1944, all forty ghost stories and the macabre etchings of New Orleans artist Charles Richards appear in this new edition. Drawing largely on popular legend dating back to the 1800s, deLavigne provides vivid details of old New Orleans with a cast of spirits that represent the ethnic mélange of the city set amid period homes, historic neighborhoods, and forgotten taverns. Combining folklore, newspaper accounts, and deLavigne’s own voice, these phantasmal tales range from the tragic—brothers, lost at sea as children, haunt a chapel on Thomas Street in search of their mother—to graphic depictions of torture, mutilation, and death. Folklorist and foreword contributor Frank A. de Caro places the writer and her work in context for modern readers. He uncovers new information about deLavigne’s life and describes her book’s pervasive lingering influence on the Crescent City’s culture today.

The Science of Ghosts

The Science of Ghosts PDF Author: Joe Nickell
Publisher: Prometheus Books
ISBN: 1616145862
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
Are ghosts real? Are there truly haunted places, only haunted people, or both? And how can we know? Taking neither a credulous nor a dismissive approach, this first-of-its-kind book solves those perplexing mysteries and more--even answering the question of why we care so very much. Putting aside purely romantic tales, this book examines the actual evidence for ghosts--from eyewitness accounts to mediumistic productions (such as diaphanous forms materializing in dim light), spirit photographs, ghost-detection phenomena, and even CSI-type trace evidence. Offering numerous exciting case studies, this book engages in serious investigation rather than breathless mystifying. Pseudoscience, folk legends, and outright hoaxes are challenged and exposed, while the historical, cultural, and scientific aspects of ghost experiences and haunting reports are carefully explored. The author--the world's only professional paranormal investigator--brings his skills as a stage magician, private detective, folklorist, and forensic science writer to bear on a topic that demands serious study.
