Book Description
When John Clark Married Ann Rogers in 1749 in Virginia, they would eventually produce ten children six sons and four daughters. Like most early American rural couples, John and Ann thought that they were raising farm hands and kitchen help. Little did they dream that their children and two more generations of Clarks would have such a great impact on Americas development from coast to coast. Three of the Clark sons would become officers, and help to win the Revolutionary War in the east. George Rogers Clark would become a general and win the Revolution in the west thus giving America the eastern one third of the continent. George would also found Louisville, and the state of Kentucky. William Clark, as the youngest Clark son, was seventeen years younger than big brother George his hero. William would also pursue a military career, and partner with Meriwether Lewis to explore the Louisiana Purchase thus giving America the middle third of the continent. William would later become a great Indian diplomat, and help to establish the state of Missouri. Williams son Meriwether Lewis, Sr. (Lewis) would go to West Point, become a famous architect, and fight in three wars. They included the Mexican War, which gave America the western third of the continent. Lewis son Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. (Lutie) would basically save the thoroughbred industry in Kentucky and America after the Civil War. He created the pari-mutuel system of betting, set up racing rules, and started Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby all of which still exist. John and Ann Clark and all of the other living off-springs eventually moved to Louisville, and added to the Clarks of Kentucky.

Wilderness Journey

Wilderness Journey PDF Author: William E. Foley
Publisher: University of Missouri Press
ISBN: 0826216633
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 343

Book Description
Strange as it may seem today, William Clark—best known as the American explorer who joined Meriwether Lewis in leading an overland expedition to the Pacific—has many more claims to fame than his legendary Voyage of Discovery, dramatic and daring though that venture may have been. Although studies have been published on virtually every aspect of the Lewis and Clark journey, Wilderness Journey is the first comprehensive account of Clark’s lengthy and multifaceted life. Following Lewis and Clark’s great odyssey, Clark’s service as a soldier, Indian diplomat, and government official placed him at center stage in the national quest to possess and occupy North America’s vast western hinterland and prefigured U.S. policies in the region. In his personal life, Clark had to overcome challenges no less daunting than those he faced in the public arena. Foley pays careful attention to the family and business dimensions of Clark’s private world, adding richness to this well-rounded and revealing portrait of the man and his courageous life. Coinciding with the bicentennial in 2004 of the departure of Lewis and Clark’s famed Corps of Discovery, Wilderness Journey fills a major gap in scholarship. Intended for the general reader, as well as for specialists in the field, this fascinating book provides a well-balanced and thorough account of one of America’s most significant frontiersmen.

Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 867

Book Description
In the mid-nineteenth century the Wisconsin Historical Society's first director, Lyman C. Draper, gathered outstanding materials such as the Daniel Boone papers, which include Draper's interviews with Boone's son, and the papers of Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark. These two collections alone are of vast significance to frontier history before 1830, but the full collection comprises nearly five hundred volumes of records, including military and government records, interviews, Draper's own research notes, and rare personal letters. For scholars, genealogists, and local historians, the Draper papers offer a wealth of information on the social, economic, and cultural conditions experienced by our frontier forebears. The 180-page index lists thousands of names and is an indispensable guide for all who wish to use the collection, which is available in libraries across the country on microfilm.
