Convex and Discrete Geometry

Convex and Discrete Geometry PDF Author: Peter M. Gruber
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540711333
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 590

Book Description
Convex and Discrete Geometry is an area of mathematics situated between analysis, geometry and discrete mathematics with numerous relations to other subdisciplines. This book provides a comprehensive overview of major results, methods and ideas of convex and discrete geometry and its applications. Besides being a graduate-level introduction to the field, it is a practical source of information and orientation for convex geometers, and useful to people working in the applied fields.

New Trends in Intuitive Geometry

New Trends in Intuitive Geometry PDF Author: Gergely Ambrus
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662574136
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 458

Book Description
This volume contains 17 surveys that cover many recent developments in Discrete Geometry and related fields. Besides presenting the state-of-the-art of classical research subjects like packing and covering, it also offers an introduction to new topological, algebraic and computational methods in this very active research field. The readers will find a variety of modern topics and many fascinating open problems that may serve as starting points for research.

Strange Phenomena in Convex and Discrete Geometry

Strange Phenomena in Convex and Discrete Geometry PDF Author: Chuanming Zong
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461384818
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 167

Book Description
Convex and discrete geometry is one of the most intuitive subjects in mathematics. One can explain many of its problems, even the most difficult - such as the sphere-packing problem (what is the densest possible arrangement of spheres in an n-dimensional space?) and the Borsuk problem (is it possible to partition any bounded set in an n-dimensional space into n+1 subsets, each of which is strictly smaller in "extent" than the full set?) - in terms that a layman can understand; and one can reasonably make conjectures about their solutions with little training in mathematics.

Lectures on Discrete Geometry

Lectures on Discrete Geometry PDF Author: Jiri Matousek
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461300398
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 491

Book Description
The main topics in this introductory text to discrete geometry include basics on convex sets, convex polytopes and hyperplane arrangements, combinatorial complexity of geometric configurations, intersection patterns and transversals of convex sets, geometric Ramsey-type results, and embeddings of finite metric spaces into normed spaces. In each area, the text explains several key results and methods.

Discrete Geometry

Discrete Geometry PDF Author: Andras Bezdek
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0824747615
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 500

Book Description
Celebrating the work of Professor W. Kuperberg, this reference explores packing and covering theory, tilings, combinatorial and computational geometry, and convexity, featuring an extensive collection of problems compiled at the Discrete Geometry Special Session of the American Mathematical Society in New Orleans, Louisiana. Discrete Geometry analyzes packings and coverings with congruent convex bodies , arrangements on the sphere, line transversals, Euclidean and spherical tilings, geometric graphs, polygons and polyhedra, and fixing systems for convex figures. This text also offers research and contributions from more than 50 esteemed international authorities, making it a valuable addition to any mathematical library.

Discrete Geometry and Optimization

Discrete Geometry and Optimization PDF Author: Károly Bezdek
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3319002007
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 341

Book Description
Optimization has long been a source of both inspiration and applications for geometers, and conversely, discrete and convex geometry have provided the foundations for many optimization techniques, leading to a rich interplay between these subjects. The purpose of the Workshop on Discrete Geometry, the Conference on Discrete Geometry and Optimization, and the Workshop on Optimization, held in September 2011 at the Fields Institute, Toronto, was to further stimulate the interaction between geometers and optimizers. This volume reflects the interplay between these areas. The inspiring Fejes Tóth Lecture Series, delivered by Thomas Hales of the University of Pittsburgh, exemplified this approach. While these fields have recently witnessed a lot of activity and successes, many questions remain open. For example, Fields medalist Stephen Smale stated that the question of the existence of a strongly polynomial time algorithm for linear optimization is one of the most important unsolved problems at the beginning of the 21st century. The broad range of topics covered in this volume demonstrates the many recent and fruitful connections between different approaches, and features novel results and state-of-the-art surveys as well as open problems.
