Articulations Between Tangible Space, Graphical Space and Geometrical Space

Articulations Between Tangible Space, Graphical Space and Geometrical Space PDF Author: Claire Guille-Biel Winder
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1394229593
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 356

Book Description
This book aims to present some of the latest research in the didactics of space and geometry, deepen some theoretical questions and open up new reflections for discourse. Its focus is as much on the approach of geometry itself and its link with the structuring of space as it is on the practices within the classroom, the dissemination of resources, the use of different artefacts and the training of teachers in this field. We study how spatial knowledge, graphical knowledge and geometric knowledge are taken into account and articulated in the teaching of space and geometry in compulsory schools, teaching resources (programs and textbooks) and current teacher training. We question how the semiotic dimension (language, gestures and signs) of geometric activity can be taken into account, and we identify the role of artefacts (digital or tangible) in the teaching and learning of geometry. This book brings together some fifteen contributions from Frenchspeaking researchers from different countries (France, Switzerland and Canada).

Geometry and Symmetry

Geometry and Symmetry PDF Author: L. Christine Kinsey
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470499494
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 960

Book Description
This new book for mathematics and mathematics education majors helps students gain an appreciation of geometry and its importance in the history and development of mathematics. The material is presented in three parts. The first is devoted to a rigorous introduction of Euclidean geometry, the second covers various noneuclidean geometries, and the last part delves into symmetry and polyhedra. Historical contexts accompany each topic. Exercises and activities are interwoven with the text to enable the students to explore geometry. Some of the activities take advantage of geometric software so students - in particular, future teachers - gain a better understanding of its capabilities. Others explore the construction of simple models or use manipulatives allowing students to experience the hands-on, creative side of mathematics. While this text contains a rigorous mathematical presentation, key design features and activities allow it to be used successfully in mathematics for teachers courses as well.

Book Description
Just about everyone takes a geometry class at one time or another. And while some people quickly grasp the concepts, most find geometry challenging. Covering everything one would expect to encounter in a high school or college course, Idiot's Guides: Geometry covers everything a student would need to know. This all-new book will integrate workbook-like practice questions to reinforce the lessons. In addition, a glossary of terms, postulates, and theorems provide a quick reference to need-to-know information as well. Easy-to-understand, step-by-step explanations walk the reader through: - Basics of Geometry - Reasoning and Proof - Perpendicular and Parallel Lines - Congruent Triangles - Properties of Triangles - Quadrilaterals - Transformations - Similarity - Right Triangles and Trigonometry - Circles - Area of Polygons and Circles - Surface Area and Volume
