Teaching Secondary Mathematics

Teaching Secondary Mathematics PDF Author: David Rock
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1003830099
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 665

Book Description
Solidly grounded in up-to-date research, theory, and technology, Teaching Secondary Mathematics is a practical, student-friendly, and popular text for secondary mathematics methods courses. It provides clear and useful approaches for mathematics teachers and shows how concepts typically found in a secondary mathematics curriculum can be taught in a positive and encouraging way. The thoroughly revised fifth edition combines this pragmatic approach with truly innovative and integrated technology content throughout. Synthesized content between the book and a comprehensive Instructor and Student Resource website offers expanded discussion of chapter topics, additional examples, and technological tips, such as using and assessing artificial intelligence. Each chapter features tried-and-tested pedagogical techniques, problem-solving challenges, discussion points, activities, mathematical challenges, and student-life-based applications that will encourage students to think and do. New to the fifth edition: • A fully revised chapter on technological advancements in the teaching of mathematics, including the use of artificial intelligence • A new chapter on equity, shame, and anxiety in the mathematics classroom • Connections to both the updated National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Focal Points and Standards • Problem-solving challenges and sticky questions featured in each chapter to encourage students to think through everyday issues and possible solutions • A fresh interior design to better highlight pedagogical elements and key features • A completely updated Instructor and Student Resource site with chapter-by-chapter video lessons, teacher tools, problem solving Q&As, exercises, and helpful links and resources.

Volume 1: Research Syntheses

Volume 1: Research Syntheses PDF Author: M. Kathleen Heid
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1607529521
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 448

Book Description
According to NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School mathematics, "Technology is essential in teaching and learning of mathematics; it influences the mathematics that is taught and it enhances students’ learning.” How does research inform this clarion call for technology in mathematics teaching and learning? In response to the need to craft appropriate roles for technology in school mathematics new technological approaches have been applied to the teaching and learning of mathematics, and these approaches have been examined by researchers world-wide. The first volume provides insight into what research suggests about the nature of mathematics learning in technological environments. Included in this volume are syntheses of research on technology in the learning of rational number, algebra, elementary and secondary geometry, mathematical modeling, and calculus. Additional chapters synthesize research on technology in the practice of teaching and on equity issues in the use of technology in mathematics instruction. Instead of simply reporting achievement scores of students who use technology in their learning, authors provide thoughtful analyses of bodies of research with the goal of understanding the ways in which technology affects what and how students learn. Each of the chapters in this volume is written by a team of experts whose own research has provided important guidance to the field.

On Evaluating Curricular Effectiveness

On Evaluating Curricular Effectiveness PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309092426
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
This book reviews the evaluation research literature that has accumulated around 19 K-12 mathematics curricula and breaks new ground in framing an ambitious and rigorous approach to curriculum evaluation that has relevance beyond mathematics. The committee that produced this book consisted of mathematicians, mathematics educators, and methodologists who began with the following charge: Evaluate the quality of the evaluations of the thirteen National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported and six commercially generated mathematics curriculum materials; Determine whether the available data are sufficient for evaluating the efficacy of these materials, and if not; Develop recommendations about the design of a project that could result in the generation of more reliable and valid data for evaluating such materials. The committee collected, reviewed, and classified almost 700 studies, solicited expert testimony during two workshops, developed an evaluation framework, established dimensions/criteria for three methodologies (content analyses, comparative studies, and case studies), drew conclusions on the corpus of studies, and made recommendations for future research.
