Book Description
This paper reviews the hydrogeology of the Delaware Basin in west Texas and southeast New Mexico. Previous studies have concentrated on local areas within the basin, or on quantitative data for important aquifers or petroleum-producing units. Data from past studies are synthesized to give general recharge, flow, and discharge patterns for the principal hydrostratigraphic units within the basin. When available and pertinent, a historical perspective on ground-water behavior is included. Special attention is given to two hydrogeological processes: 1) hydrogen sulfide migration, and 2) evaporite dissolution features. These phenomena shed light on the paleohydrology of the Delaware Basin and may have implications for future problems such as ground-water quality, exploration for mineral resources, and storage of radioactive and other hazardous wastes.
