This volume comprises a selection of essays by scholars from a variety of disciplines that discuss the exchange relationship between Africa and the wider Indian Ocean world (IOW), a macro-region running from East Africa to China, from early times to about 1300 CE. Book Description
The International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) was established as a means of raising worldwide public and political awareness of the vast, though frequently under-used, potential the Earth Sciences possess for improving the quality of life of the peoples of the world and safeguarding Earth’s rich and diverse environments. The International Year project was jointly initiated in 2000 by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the Earth Science Division of the United Nations Educational, Scienti?c and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). IUGS, which is a Non-Governmental Organisation, and UNESCO, an Inter-Governmental Orga- sation, already shared a long record of productive cooperation in the natural sciences and their application to societal problems, including the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) now in its fourth decade. With its main goals of raising public awareness of, and enhancing research in the Earth sciences on a global scale in both the developed and less-developed countries of the world, two operational programmes were demanded. In 2002 and 2003, the Series Editors together with Dr. Ted Nield and Dr. Henk Schalke (all four being core members of the Management Team at that time) drew up outlines of a Science and an Outreach Programme. In 2005, following the UN proclamation of 2008 as the United Nations International Year of Planet Earth, the “Year” grew into a triennium (2007–2009).

Geographic and Oceanographic Research in Indian Waters

Geographic and Oceanographic Research in Indian Waters PDF Author: Robert Beresford Seymour Sewell
Publisher: Daya Books
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 684

Book Description
In this book The Geographic and Oceanographic Research in Indian Waters , the author has attempted to bring together the results that have been obtained from a study of oceanography which includes not only the hydrographic and meteorological conditions present but also the topography of the sea-floor and the character of its deposits, as well as the formation and structure of the coral reefs and islands, in the area that has been surveyed by the Marine Survey of India and as such termed as Indian waters. The book presents all the knowledge possessed at that time regarding the physical conditions present in India seas. In the Author s opinion the investigations regarding the conditions present in the waters of the sea have shown conclusively that these are in a continuous state of change. In consequence of all this continual change, isolated observations taken by Challenger , Valdavia etc, give merely a picture of the conditions existing at the actual moment when the observations were made and furnish no guide as to what may be the state of affairs even a few hours later. The effect of these changes on the fauna must be considerable and in consequence the study of the physical conditions that exist in any given area forms an important branch of the study of the bionomics of that area. Contents Chapter 1: The Geography of the Andaman Sea Basin; Chapter 2: A Study of the Nature of the Sea-Bed and of the Deep-Sea Deposits of the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal; Chapter 3: Maritime Meteorology in Indian Seas; Chapter 4: The Temperature and Salinity of the Coastal Water of the Andaman Sea; Chapter 5: The Temperature and Salinity of the Surface Waters of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, with References to the Laccadive Sea; Chapter 6: The Temperature and Salinity of the Deeper Waters of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea; Chapter 7: The Topography and Bottom Deposits of the Laccadive Sea; Chapter 8: Studies on Coral and Coral-Formations in Indian Waters; Chapter 9: Index.
