Book Description
Here is the first volume to examine sulfur in fossil fuels from a geochemical perspective. It begins with six introductory chapters that present an overview of the material, historical background, and summaries of the present state of knowledge. Subsequent chapters cover: case studies of specific sedimentary environments; characterization of sulfur in selected coals and petroleums by various methods and techniques; and the major advances in understanding geochemistry at the molecular level. This important volume fills a significant gap in the technical literature and updates the understanding of the chemical processes in geological environments giving rise to sulfur fossil fuels.

Geochemical Investigations in Earth and Space Sciences

Geochemical Investigations in Earth and Space Sciences PDF Author: R.J. Hill
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080472850
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 481

Book Description
This volume is the product of a technical session organized for the 2002 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in recognition of Isaac Kaplan's many contributions to various fields of geochemistry. As Kaplan enters his sixth decade of scientific investigation, it is fair to say that his work has touched or influenced innumerable scientists either directly or indirectly. Readers of this volume are presented with a collection of 29 papers written by former students, post-doctoral researchers, friends and colleagues from countries all over the world (including Sweden, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Israel and the United States) from the fields of stable isotope, forensic, environmental and petroleum geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry and cosmochemistry. The stable isotope section includes papers investigating climate change, diagenesis, recent sediment and petroleum geochemistry and cosmochemistry problems. The forensic and environmental geochemistry section includes a variety of papers ranging from trace metals in soils to atmospheric CO2 projections. The petroleum geochemistry section includes both basic research and applied geochemistry papers. The ancient and recent sediments section contains papers ranging from carbon flux in modern sediments to Precambrian microfossils. All of the articles together cover a broad range of geochemical studies and represent the diverse and distinguished career of Isaac Kaplan.

Fossil Matter in the Geosphere

Fossil Matter in the Geosphere PDF Author: Jan Schwarzbauer
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319119389
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 165

Book Description
The first volume in this new text book series covers comprehensively relevant aspects related to the appearance and characterisation of fossil matter in the geosphere such as kerogen, oil, shales and coals. As organic geochemistry is a modern scientific subject characterized by a high transdisciplinarity and located at the edge of chemistry, environmental sciences, geology and biology, there clearly is a need for a flexible offer of appropriate academic teaching material on an undergraduat level addressed to the variety of students coming originally from different study disciplines. For such a flexible usage this textbook series' consists of different volumes with clear defined aspects and with manageable length.

Marine Geochemistry

Marine Geochemistry PDF Author: Horst D. Schulz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662042428
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 463

Book Description
A summary of the latest research in this field. The topics comprise the sedimentological examination and physical properties of the sedimentary solid phase, pore water and pore water constituents, organic matter as the driving force of most microbiological processes, biotic and abiotic redox reactions, carbonates and stable isotopes as proxies for paleoclimate reconstruction, metal enrichments in ferromanganese nodules and crusts as well as in hot vents and cold seeps on the seafloor. The current model conceptions lead to the development of different types of computer models, allowing the global mass exchanges between oceans and sediments to be balanced.

Geochemical Studies

Geochemical Studies PDF Author: Bozzano G Luisa
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0444599428
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
Geochemical Studies is a collection of papers dealing with ore petrology, particularly on the genesis of ores found in sediments. One paper describes the minor elements in metal deposits in sedimentary rocks, focusing on geochemical work on certain classes of ores in sediments and on the theories of origin of the deposits. With better techniques of microprobe analysis of trace elements, the paper notes that ore deposits in sedimentary rocks can be characterized by their minor element suites. One paper points out that large ore deposits cannot possibly be formed by a migration of substances (known as "negative" diffusion). The paper estimates that the quantities of material that can be accumulated in a sediment horizon with a great affinity for these materials, say in a period of one billion years, will still not be sufficient to produce a large ore deposit. The paper estimates the necessary diffusion coefficients that occur in deep structures, where increased mobilities of various substances occur. Geologists, geochemists, and engineers working with fossil fuels will find the collection highly significant.

An Introduction to Organic Geochemistry

An Introduction to Organic Geochemistry PDF Author: Stephen Douglas Killops
Publisher: Longman Scientific and Technical
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
"An Introduction to Organic Geochemistry explores the fate of organic matter in the geosphere, from its biological origins to its long-term preservation in sedimentary rock, through various biogeochemical transformations and recycling processes. The text focuses on the formation of organic-rich sedimentary deposits and fossil fuels but also covers other important areas of environmental geochemistry, notably pollution." "Geology, geochemistry and environmental science undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as students of ecology and oceanography, will find this text an essential introduction to organic geochemistry. Petroleum geologists and organisations involved in petroleum exploration will also find it an invaluable source of information." "Key topics covered include the global carbon cycle and natural processes; production and chemical composition of biogenic matter; environments associated with accumulation of organic-rich sediments; biogeochemical and thermal alteration in sediments, soil and water column; formation, occurrence and exploration of fossil fuels; man's influence on biogeochemical cycles, including global climate change; and factors affecting the behaviour of pollutants in the environment." "Stephen and Vanessa Killops have structured the text to accommodate readers with varied scientific backgrounds. Essential terminology is defined fully and boxes are used to explain concepts introduced from other disciplines. Further study is aided by the incorporation of carefully selected literature references."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
