Ethanol as an alternative fuel is receiving a lot of attention because it addresses concerns related to dwindling oil supplies, energy independence, and climate change. The majority of the ethanol in the US is produced from corn starch. With the US Department of Energy’s target that 30% of the fuel in the US is produced from renewable resources by 2030, the anticipated demand for corn starch will quickly exceed the current production of corn. This, plus the concern that less grain will become available for food and feed purposes, necessitates the use of other feedstocks for the production of ethanol. For the very same reasons, there is increasing research activity and growing interest in many other biomass crops. Genetic Improvement of Bio-Energy Crops focuses on the production of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass, which includes corn stover, biomass from dedicated annual and perennial energy crops, and trees as well as a number of important biomass crops. The biomass is typically pretreated through thermochemical processing to make it more amenable to hydrolysis with cellulolytic enzymes. The enzymatic hydrolysis yields monomeric sugars that can be fermented to ethanol by micro-organisms. While much emphasis has been placed on the optimization of thermo-chemical pretreatment processes, production of more efficient hydrolytic enzymes, and the development of robust microbial strains, relatively little effort has been dedicated to the improvement of the biomass itself.

The Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program (CFGRP) begins its third generation of genetic improvement and gene conservation of southern pine. The CFGRP, founded in 1953 by geneticists Tom Perry and Ray Goddard, is a cooperative organization composed of FAES scientists working together with private industries and state agencies to develop genetically improved varieties of slash pine (Pinus elliottii), loblolly pine (P. taeda), longleaf pine (P. palustris) and sand pine (P. clausa). Through faster growth and greater disease resistance, plantations of improved southern pine yield up to 45 percent more usable wood per acre at harvest than the unimproved plantations.

The objectives of this study were to determine if there are: (1) genetic differences in growth traits among provenances, (2) any trends of significances for locating the most suitable provenances, and (3) any geenetic-environment interaction. Additional objectives were to determiee (4) future uses of the trials, (5) improvements of the experimentalpprocedures, and (6>) future direction of the experimentation aiming a the genetic improvement of these pines. Thirty-five seedlots of loblolly pine and 20 seedlots of slash pine were tested in two series. Redommized and replicated trials were established in four locations. Mortaiity was higher in Series 1 for both species due to long-distance transportation of bare root seedlings. There were very importandiffences in loblolly pine growth rate due provenance in both series. On seedlots from Livingston Parish was consistently among a leader at all test locations. Other seedlots from Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, and one Braszlian seedlot were also fast growing. Genotype-environment interaction were strong in Series 1 and smaller in Series 2. Ageneral trend of coastal seedlots to growth faster than ones was observed in both series. The most higly recommended area seed collection for planting in Brazilis the coastal region stretching 120 kilometers from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean is seven southern states. The consistent superiority of Livingston Parish indicates that Brazilian growers can obtain immediate improvement (...).

The forest industry will increasingly rely on fast-growing intensively managed southern pine plantations to furnish wood and fiber. Intensive silvicultural practices, including competition control, stand density control, fertilization, and genetic improvement are yielding tremendous gains in the quantity of wood production from commercial forest land. How these technologies affect wood properties was heretofore unknown, although there is concern about the suitability of fast-grown wood for traditional forest products. A four year study was undertaken to examine the effects of these intensive practices on the properties of loblolly and slash pine wood by applying a common sampling method over 10 existing field experiments. Early weed control gets young pines off to a rapid start, often with dramatically increased growth rates. This response is all in juvenile wood however, which is low in density and strength. Similar results are found with early Nitrogen fertilization at the time of planting. These treatments increase the proportion of juvenile wood in the tree. Later, mid-rotation fertilization with Nitrogen and Phosphorus can have long term (4-8 year) growth gains. Slight reductions in wood density are short-lived (1-2 years) and occur while the tree is producing dense, stiff mature wood. Impacts of mid-rotation fertilization on wood properties for manufacturing are estimated to be minimal. Genetic differences are evident in wood density and other properties. Single family plantings showed somewhat more uniform properties than bulk improved or unimproved seedlots. Selection of genetic sources with optimal wood properties may counter some of the negative impacts of intensive weed control and fertilization. This work will allow forest managers to better predict the effects of their practices on the quality of their final product.
