Book Description
A method previously presented by the author (in ASTM STP 154) is generalized to encompass soils having nonlinear p-y characteristics. This results in a method that can handle, but is not restricted to, pile-soil systems having (1) piles greater than 9 m (30 ft) in length having free, fixed, or partially fixed heads, and any cross-sectional shape and length relationship, for example, constant, tapered, or stepped, and of any materials or combination of materials; (2) soils of any variation with depth, whether homogeneous, stratified, or combinations thereof, and having p-y characteristics of any nature; (3) ability to qualitatively and quantitatively predict behavior and stresses under static, fluctuating, and repetitive lateral loadings, or where larger emergency loads can be interspersed between normal loads. Ways are suggested for dealing with each of these factors. In addition, a method is proposed for obtaining the effective soil constant at a given site for a range of lateral loads, using empirical test data from free-head piles of the same characteristics subjected to lateral loads. The method is validated by use on previously published data of a comprehensive series of tests on free-head piles by Assadeh and Davison (Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundation Division, Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Volume 96, No. SM5, Sept. 1970, pp. 1583-1603). Using the soil constants resulted in computed load-deflection curves closely approximating actual data. These constants are used in turn to compute the expected deflections and pile stress of those same piles under fixed-head conditions.

Analysis of Laterally Loaded Piles in Multilayered Soil Deposits

Analysis of Laterally Loaded Piles in Multilayered Soil Deposits PDF Author: Dipanjan Basu
Publisher: Purdue University Press
ISBN: 9781622601264
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
This report focuses on the development of a new method of analysis of laterally loaded piles embedded in a multi-layered soil deposit treated as a three-dimensional continuum. Assuming that soil behaves as a linear elastic material, the governing differential equations for the deflection of laterally loaded piles were obtained using energy principles and calculus of variations. The differential equations were solved using both the method of initial parameters and numerical techniques. Soil resistance, pile deflection, slope of the deflected pile, bending moment and shear force can be easily obtained at any depth along the entire pile length. The results of the analysis were in very good agreement with three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The analysis was further extended to account for soil nonlinearity. A few simple constitutive relationships that allow for modulus degradation with increasing strain were incorporated into the analysis. The interaction of piles in groups was also studied.

Behavioral Characteristics of Group Batter Piles According to Pile Inclination and Action Direction Under Statically Lateral Loads

Behavioral Characteristics of Group Batter Piles According to Pile Inclination and Action Direction Under Statically Lateral Loads PDF Author: Gi-Chun Kang

Pages : 19

Book Description
Pile foundations are designed by vertical piles; however, sometimes batter piles are considered because of their bending rigidity. In general, batter piles are known to have more lateral resistance than the vertical piles, but limited research has been conducted on them because of application limitations and the fact that interpreting construction equipment is difficult. Additionally, field application cases are rarely used for off-shore plants in which lateral loads have a great effect on the foundations of wind power structures. In a single pile, the interaction behavior of a subgrade-pile is so complicated that accurate predictions are impossible. This study is designed to aid in understanding the behavioral characteristics of group batter piles on which a lateral load acts through a model test. The experiments were conducted with 22 single batter piles and 48 group batter piles, and the results showed that the lateral resistance increased as the tilt angle rose. Furthermore, the lateral resistance was at its peak when the lateral loading angle was 60°, and the resistance of the front pile was greater than that of the rear pile. The bending moment, according to the angle of tilt, changed as the group of piles generally increased and as the angle of tilt rose for both the front and rear piles. The action position of the maximum bending moment tends to go up toward the upper part of the piles as the angle of tilt rises for the front and rear piles.

Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading

Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading PDF Author: Lymon C. Reese
Publisher: CRC Press

Pages : 529

Book Description
The complexities of designing piles for lateral loads are manifold as there are many forces that are critical to the design of big structures such as bridges, offshore and waterfront structures and retaining walls. The loads on structures should be supported either horizontally or laterally or in both directions and most structures have in common t

An Investigation of the Behavior of Vertical Piles in Cohesive Soils Subjected to Repetitive Lateral Loads PDF Author: James Howard Long

Book Description
The results of several repetitive lateral load tests on single piles from previous studies were analyzed. Current techniques for predicting this cyclic and static behavior of piles were reviewed, and predictions of both static- and cyclic-lateral-load behavior were compared with measured behavior. The scour phenomenon that occurs when water above the ground surface flows into and out of any gaps that form between the pile and clay during cyclic loading was examined. Conclusions are drawn related to the relevance of these studies to current procedures of estimating the response of piles in clay due to cyclic lateral loading. Keywords: Pile structures; Load distribution; Cyclic loads; Lateral loads.
