This i$ another instance of what very often occurs among the inhabitants of fens, as well as uplands. Having been used to observe the ordinary operations that are continually passing before their eyes, it very frequently happens, that they cannot discern any proposed improvement, without feeling alarmed for its consequences: and concluding that it is meant to undo all that they have been in the habit of considering as essential to their welfare. Hence it is, we so frequently see men come into a district remote from their own homes (such men as have acquired knowledge by observation), and make fortunes by menus which the peopleof that district never thought of. If, for instance, any one possessed of common skill in draining, was now to purchase the tract of ground at present injured for want of the drain here proposed, he would most assuredly make a large fortune by draining it, and that without the smallest prejudice or injury to any other part of the level, or to the occupiers thereof. SECT. 16 SECT. II.--IRRIGATION. The advantages of irrigation are now sufficiently Understood among all classes of farmers in this district, from observing the great benefit resulting therefrom among those occupiers of the vale or sideland grounds, where streams can be diverted from their original courses, so as to overflow the slopes and meadows below. It is not however every stream that will afford improvement to land, particularly in the vicinity of mines of any kind; and a small experiment, within the reach of every occupier of these hilly lands, should be made, before any heavy expense be incurred by making water-courses.
