Book Description
Applied Anatomy & Physiology: an interdisciplinary approach provides an overview of basic anatomy and physiology (A&P), and its application to clinical practice. Written by a team of expert academics and clinicians from a range of health backgrounds, the text uses a problem-solving approach, breaking down difficult A&P concepts through case studies, multiple-choice questions, images, feature boxes and online ancillaries, with a strong focus on the concept of the ‘normal’ homeostatic process of each system. Applied Anatomy & Physiology: an interdisciplinary approach encourages students to think critically about how the different body systems work together, providing a deeper understanding of A&P and how to apply this effectively to clinical practice. Written for students with minimal bioscience background to support you in understanding difficult concepts and processes. Chapters are aligned to major body systems and include an overview of system structure and function as well as integration of each system with the rest of the body. Case studies and related multiple-choice questions consolidate chapter content to assist you in testing your knowledge and skills. The strong focus on the homeostatic process of each system helps you to understand what is ‘normal’ and how ‘normal’ works. Full-colour illustrations from leading Elsevier texts, such as Patton’s Anatomy & Physiology, help you to visualise and understand A&P systems and processes. Includes an eBook with purchase of the print book. Additional resources on Evolve eBook on VitalSource Instructor/and Student Resources: Answers to case study questions Multiple-choice questions and answers + rationales Image bank

Book Description
The French anatomist, pathologist, and physiologist Marie Franois Xavier Bichat (1771-1802) was the founder of general anatomy and animal histology.Bichat's experimental work had great influence and was quoted for a long time as a model of experimental exactitude and penetrating insight. In this context it is interesting to note that Bichat refused all his life to make use of the most advanced experimental tool for anatomy, namely, the microscope. His feverish activity weakened him, and in 1802, after a fall from the Htel-Dieu's staircase, he contracted a fever and died on July 22, only 31 years old. This brilliant man had an enormous impact on French science not only through his experimental work and new version of vitalistic philosophy, but also through his writing of basic textbooks and establishing of research institutions.

Characterised by its friendly and accessible writing style, each chapter of Anatomy & Physiology, 1st European edition, comes with a range of helpful learning features such as study hints, chapter outlines, language of science and medicine lists, case studies, chapter summaries and review and critical thinking questions. The volume also boasts over 1400 images together with the unique underlying themes entitled the 'big picture' and 'cycle of life', which serve to emphasize the importance of the interrelationship between systems of the body and how these systems are influenced, in turn, by development and aging. Alongside this emphasis on interdependence and change, comes a focus on homeostasis, which enables the reader to see how the healthy body is one that is carefully tuned and that disease can readily occur when internal balance is disrupted." -- provided by publisher.
