The impact of gender socialization on psychological functioning has been an area of inquiry since feminist researchers in the 1970s began studying the psychological development of girls and women. This research has established gender as a valuable construct by which psychological development can be understood. As a result, more is known about how growing up female can lead to the development of particular constellations of behaviors, emotions, and experiences, and the atrophying of others. Recently, the impact of gender socialization on boys and men has also become an area of psychological inquiry. However, researchers are just beginning to delineate the gender-specific developmental pathway for males and its accompanying constellations of behaviors, emotions, and experiences. This study will contribute to this growing body of literature by examining the ways in which masculine socialization and its prohibitions against expressing emotional vulnerability affects boys' perceptions of peers and themselves. A sample of adolescent males will be given the Gender Role Conflict Scale for Adolescents (GRCS-A) to measure the amount and type of distress experienced in comparing themselves to the socialized masculine ideal. Participants will then view a videotaped vignette of an adolescent boy expressing vulnerable feelings and behaviors contrary to this ideal. Following the video, participants will describe the boy in the video using the 300-word Adjective Check List (ACL). Pearson product moment correlations will be used to test ten hypotheses related to participants' degrees of gender role conflict and its relationship to five particularly salient ACL subscale scores. Exploratory analysis will also be done using frequency distributions to look at the ten adjectives most frequently used to rate the boy in the video. It is hoped that this study will offer more insight into how gender socialization impacts adolescent boys' identity development, as well as their perceptions of non-traditional masculine behavior.

ABSTRACT: Gender identity development can be an arduous process for many adolescents and emerging adults. Both the paths of gender development and the resulting identities of young people can have a great effect on the development and later lives of these individuals. One difficulty youth can face at this stage is gender role conflict, an issue arising from conflict within male youth associated with gender socialization process. The purpose of this study was to examine gender role conflict in adolescent and emerging adult males and how it affects their resilience, or their ability to "bounce back" from adverse circumstances. Specifically, the study investigated the effects of gender role conflict on male adolescent/emerging adult resilience. Results of the study revealed a complex relationship between male gender role conflict and resilience in this sample. Multiple regression modeling showed that as conflict surrounding the Success, Power and Competition (SPC) pattern increased, these male youth reported more resilience. Conversely, as conflict surrounding the Restrictive Emotionality (RE) pattern increased, male youth sampled reported less resilience. Further study is needed to explore these relationships and their effects in adolescent and emerging adult males more closely. More specifically, research should focus on the gender socialization process, the development of gender role conflict, and its effects on male youth throughout the gender development process.
