This study explored the relationship between gender role conflict and psychological functioning in a sample of 80 Black/African American college men ages 18-43 years old. Participants completed the 1986 Gender Role Conflict by O'Neil, Helms, Gable, David, and Wrightsman and 3 other measures assessing African American acculturation, Race/Gender Identity Salience, and various indices of psychological functioning. Results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that gender role conflict was negatively related to self-esteem and positively related to anxiety and depression. However, the analyses also indicated that the relationships between gender role conflict and indices of psychological functioning were moderated by traditional African American religious acculturation and Black/male identity salience. The findings are discussed in terms of their implications for mental health professionals and college/university administrations. Directions for future research are also suggested.
