Friendship and Social Interaction

Friendship and Social Interaction PDF Author: Valerian J. Derlega
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461248809
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
A neglected topic in the field of personal relationships has been the study of friendships. Social psychologists have studied how and why individuals are attracted to one another and the processes of interaction during initial encounters, but they have not paid much attention to ongoing friend ships. A major goal of the present volume is to develop theories and integrate research on the development and maintenance of friendships. Another major goal is to build bridges between social psychologists and other social scientists by presenting an interdisciplinary approach. Although a majority of the contributors are social psychologists, other authors include sociol ogists as well as developmental, personality, and clinical psychologists. The chapters also present research on friendship based on a wide range of research methodologies, including laboratory research as well as longi tudinal, naturalistic, and clinical studies. Hence, the book incorporates a variety of conceptual and methodological approaches that should con tribute to a cross-fertilization of ideas among disciplines. The first chapter, by Barbara A. Winstead and Valerian J. Derlega, provides an overview of theory and research on friendship. The second chapter, by Daniel Perlman and Beverley Fehr, provides a summary and conceptual critique of social psychological theories of social attraction that are relevant to the study of friendship. Adopting a developmental approach, Duane Buhrmester and Wyndol Furman, in Chapter 3, demonstrate the particular importance of friendship during middle childhood and adolescence in fulfilling interpersonal needs.

Boundaries of Privacy

Boundaries of Privacy PDF Author: Sandra Petronio
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791487857
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Offering a practical theory for why people make decisions about revealing and concealing private information, Boundaries of Privacy taps into everyday problems in our personal relationships, our health concerns, and our work to investigate the way we manage our private lives. Petronio argues that in addition to owning our own private information, we also take on the responsibility of guarding other people's private information when it is put into our trust. This can often lead to betrayal, errors in judgment, deception, gossip, and privacy dilemmas. Petronio's book serves as a guide to understanding why certain decisions about privacy succeed while others fail.

Sex and Gender Differences in Personal Relationships

Sex and Gender Differences in Personal Relationships PDF Author: Daniel J. Canary
Publisher: Guilford Press
ISBN: 9781572303225
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
Challenging a commonly held assumption that men and women hail from different psychological and social "planets," this illuminating work reexamines what the empirical research really shows about how the sexes communicate in close relationships. The volume demonstrates that stereotypical beliefs about men and women fail to predict their actual interaction behavior, and highlights evidence of similarities - as well as differences - between the two groups. Setting forth an integrative theory of gender differences, the authors propose that communication behavior in different activities is the means by which sex and gender role expectations are created and sustained. This volume is suitable for students, scholars, and researchers in communication, social psychology, marriage and family studies, and gender studies as well as clinicians working with individuals, couples, and families.

Women and Men As Friends

Women and Men As Friends PDF Author: Michael Monsour
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 1135658854
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 644

Book Description
This monograph studies women and men as friends from a developmental perspective. Women and Men as Friends examines cross-sex friendships from early childhood through old age, then summarizes the findings and offers recommendations on how friendship between males and females can be encouraged throughout the life span. In each chapter three themes are documented and applied to the corresponding stage of life: *Cross-sex friendships enrich an individual's social network in generic and unique ways. *Social and structural barriers interfere with the formation of cross-sex friendships in every stage of life. *Cross-sex friendships affect and are affected by an individual's ongoing social construction of self throughout the life cycle. The primary audience for the volume is scholars and students in personal relationship study (interpersonal communication, social psychology, sociology) with a secondary audience of scholars in family studies, developmental psychology, and clinical psychologists. The book can also be used as a supplemental text in graduate and undergraduate courses for the relevant disciplines.

Under-Studied Relationships

Under-Studied Relationships PDF Author: Julia T. Wood
Publisher: SAGE Publications, Incorporated
ISBN:
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
A full understanding of relationship processes must include consideration of theoretically inconvenient and/or socially disfavored instances as well as those whose value and importance, traditionally, have been acknowledged in research. "Moving off the beaten track," Under-Studied Relationships begins to rectify existing scholarship's tendency to ignore the diverse and emergent forms of relationships that are increasingly evident in modern society. Editors Julia T. Wood and Steve Duck have gathered together outstanding researchers in the field to discuss such largely overlooked issues as long-lasting marriages, cultural-minority relationships, lesbian/gay relationships, simultaneous hierarchical and friendships at work, nonmarital cohabitation, long-distance relationships, and personal relationships over computer networks.
