One of the sessions at last year's annual AAG meeting was titled "You Can't Take a Census Without Geographic Support." And indeed, two of the major functions of the Census Bureau's Geography Division are the definition of geographic units, such as tracts and enumeration districts, and the preparation of maps depicting those units. With the 1970 Census of Population and Housing, however, the Census Bureau was faced with a more critical geographic task. The Bureau had to develop a geographic reference file which would permit the assignment of geographic codes through automated procedures to all street addresses in the urban cores of Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA's). The Bureau's response to this task was the development of Address Coding Guides (ACG's), forerunner to the GBF/DIME System.
