The Unfinished Journey

The Unfinished Journey PDF Author: Searetha Smith-Collins
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN: 1644163047
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
Without clear direction, without understanding of one's past, without heroes (including women) and positive role models, without family, without connections to neighbors and a viable community, without social tranquility or firm rootedness, without at least one parent who can be at home to parent, without community control, power, and influence, without a reference group with whom to identify, without stability of one's personal world, without clearly designated leaders, without hope and a clear vision of life's expectancies and survival prospects, without a spiritual and moral centeredness, there is chaos. Where there is chaos and lack of vision, the people perish. Without economic opportunity and outlets to release despair and anger, without a feeling of safety and security, without an unlimited future, without controls on the use of drugs, violence (including gun violence), and sexual promiscuity, without responsibility and consequences for inappropriate behavior, without responsibility as well as rights, without commonly agreed upon expectations for structure and discipline, without religious, family, and personal values to help connect people, without concern for the collective as well as the individual, without nurture, without a circle of support from a responsible, caring parent, coach, teacher, grandparent, minister, neighbor, or community member, without someone who will take the time to reach out to make one feel special and valued, the children suffer and the people are dysfunctional. Where there is dysfunction, the people are a threat to themselves and the institution of family and society. How do you promote ways to shape success out of circumstances, so as, to empower future generations to come? The expression of music, especially in African American spiritual and gospel tradition provides insight into how trials, threats, and traditions have sustained us over the generations. Whether we are talking about our personal storms, or our family, societal, or global threats, the first stanza of an old gospel hymn, written fifty years ago by Ruth Caye Jones, entitled, "In Times Like These" rings true, inspires, and calls out to each generation still today: "In times like these, we need a Savior, We need an anchor; In times like these We need a friend; Be very sure, be very sure, Your anchor holds and grips a Solid Rock."

Asians and Pacific Islanders in American Football

Asians and Pacific Islanders in American Football PDF Author: Joel S. Franks
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 1498560989
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 307

Book Description
This book sheds light on experiences relatively underrepresented in academic and non-academic sport history. It examines how Asian and Pacific Islander peoples used American football to maintain a sense of community while encountering racial exclusion, labor exploitation, and colonialism. Through their participation and spectatorship in American football, Asian and Pacific Islander people crossed treacherous cultural frontiers to construct what sociologist Elijah Anderson has called a cosmopolitan canopy under which Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and people of diverse racial and ethnic identities interacted with at least a semblance of respect and equity. And perhaps a surprising number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have excelled in college and even professional football before the 1960s. Finally, acknowledging the impressive influx of elite Pacific Islander gridders who surfaced in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, it is vital to note as well the racialized nativism shadowing the lives of these athletes.

Holden On To Family Roots

Holden On To Family Roots PDF Author: Linda Holden Givens
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1477160817
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
This book is about HOLDEN on to your family history. It is not a typical type of book. It begins with the Great-grandfather and works it way down thru the children. This is a family history from the perspective of a granddaughter. Since 1992, I have been working on my family genealogy and talked about publishing my manuscript. I procrastinated and over the years I saw several books published that mentioned my family in them. Finally I decided to have my manuscript published so that those who were already familiar with my family could actually read short stories and some history about my family and not just focus on music as well as share the uniqueness of my family with anyone. Briefly, I come from a family of musicians: 1. Granddaughter of Oscar Holden - Patriarch of Seattle - http://www.amazon.com/Jackson-Street-After-Hours-Seattle/dp/0912365927/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242151327&sr=8-1 2. Daughter of Dave L. Holden, Sr. - Musician around Seattle - http://historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=2562 3. Sister of David L. Holden, Jr. - Musician around Seattle (currently play in the band GruvBox) - http://www.gruvbox.com 4. Niece of Ron Holden - Hit song in 1960 called: ´Love you so´ - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Holden 5. Niece of Jimmy Holden - Musician around Seattle - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=450105699 6. Sister of Darrelle Holden – Background singer for Tom Jones - http://tomjonesinternational.com/toms-music/behind-the-scenes/backup-singers 7. Cousin of MarJean Holden - http://marjeanholden.com There have been several books that have mentioned my family in them and on the front cover of ‘Jackson Street After Hours’ is my grandfather because he has been called: ´The Patriarch of Seattle´, the one that brought jazz to Seattle. The following are a few named books that mention my grandfather, father and uncle: 1. The Fortunes of Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans Creole and ‘Inventor of jazz’, Alan Lomax 2. Dead Man Blues Jelly Roll Morton Way out West, Phil Pastras 3. The Lost History of Jazz in Canada (1914-1949) Such Melodious Racket, Mark Miller 4. The Roots of Jazz in Seattle - Jackson Street After Hours, Paul de Barros (grandfather on cover of book)
