The Artful Garden

The Artful Garden PDF Author: James van Sweden
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 0679643672
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
“I want to put the mystery back into the heart of garden design, where it needs to be. It’s what lures you in through the gate, keeps you moving through the landscape, and fills you with excitement along the way. The sense of mystery is what turns a mere display of plants, paths, and ornaments into an adventure.” —James van Sweden Guided by world-renowned landscape architect James van Sweden and horticulture expert Tom Christopher, any gardener can learn the secrets of the gardener’s art and absorb the essence of inspired garden design. In their gifted hands, creating your own perfect garden, with its own alluring mysteries, turns out to be not only easy but a delight. Whether it’s a ten-foot-square city terrace or a ten-acre expanse, the same principles apply: the intelligent use of positive and negative space, of form and scale, of light and shadow, of rough and smooth textures. Do you want a garden you can immerse yourself in? A garden you can smell and listen to as well as observe? An exuberant garden or a contemplative garden? In this elegantly written and visually stunning book, van Sweden reveals the secrets of famous gardens around the world and encourages you to find inspiration in the arts—in painting (from America’s classic regional artists to the abstract expressionists), music (from classical to jazz), sculpture, even dance. He introduces you to famous artists who share how their art has influenced the design of their own gardens, and teaches you to think not in terms of borders and beds or even paths and meadows but of a tapestry woven from sky, trees, rocks, vines, flowers, grasses, and space. Richly illustrated throughout with magnificent photographs, The Artful Garden both tells and shows, sharing with beginning and experienced gardeners a wealth of inspiration and practical help. “What’s my message?” van Sweden asks in conclusion. The wise answer: “Don’t squander the potential for surprise and wonder.” This beautiful book guarantees everyone who reads it a priceless store of gardening wisdom.

Book Description
Excerpt from Gardens: Their Form and Design Gentle reader, Before this book goes forth, to find a place perhaps in the homes of garden-lovers, I should like to explain how it has come into existence. It has been my habit for many years past to note anything that has struck me as being of special interest or beauty in the many gardens which I have visited; and thus I have a large collection of memoranda. These have been carefully preserved with a view to transmitting them to students at the College of Gardening at Glynde. Some of my young people tell me that they have been helped by them, and have been made to see beauties and detect faults in garden design which otherwise might have passed unnoticed. It is in the hope that owners of gardens may find in my recollections something to ponder over and consider that they are now offered to the Public. I have sought to give suggestions for the perfection of gardens, both small and large, dealing not so much with the colour and arrangement of individual plants as with the lie of the ground and the planning of restful lines, as comprehended by the far-reaching Art of Garden Design. Envisioning the Garden

Envisioning the Garden PDF Author: Robert Mallet
Publisher: WW Norton
ISBN: 9780393733426
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
An expert shares practical, easily achieved principles for making beautiful gardens. What style to give a garden and how best to lay it out are perennial puzzles for creators of gardens. Gardener/designer Robert Mallet shows how the basic elements of design—line, scale, distance, shape, color, and other sensory associations—can open the viewer’s outlook toward broad perspectives or, conversely, can lock us up in a cage. Reviewing all these elements, Mallet explains what really works, offering a range of practical ideas that can be adapted to visually enlarge space and liberate the mind. He illustrates his ideas in 160 beautiful photographs and the skillful drawings of architect Yves Poinsot. Mallet was for over twenty years in charge of Le Bois des Moutiers, a park created by his grandfather in Normandy, one of the most beautiful gardens in France, where he was able to put his ideas to the test within the context of a masterpiece of scenic design.
