Garage Band Theory - GBTool 04 Scales PDF Author: Duke Sharp

Book Description
Why would anyone practice scales? When you could wash windows or scrub walls or visit the dentist instead? For the same reason athletes work out - to be quicker, more flexible, develop stamina. Daily exercise keeps them in shape for whatever the game happens to be at the moment, whether it's basketball, rugby or water polo, they're probably gonna be able to find a spot and contribute. Same thing goes for musicians - jazz, bluegrass, rock or reggae, when you don't have to overcome physical obstacles, you can play it all. It really works. It doesn't happen overnight. Or even in a month. But it works. Basic major scale practice may also be the best ear training tool there is, since all the chords you'll ever learn are derived from this scale as well as the vast majority of melodies here in the western world. The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to understand how similar all the instruments are and how they all relate to the keyboard - and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info. (answer key included) This book is an excerpt taken from Garage Band Theory and you might find that to be a better value - it's available on Amazon. GBT covers everything you need to understand, play and make your own music! Here is a very brief recap of what you get when you order GBT: -Multi-genre approach - dozens of musical examples provide lots of variety, which makes you more well rounded musically. -Chapter quizzes and an answer key allows students to measure progress. -Learn to read music - with GBT examples + free software you develop reading skills without having to actually play an instrument. -Tablature for guitar, mandolin, banjo as well as a standard notation for keyboards, brass and woodwinds. The YouTube channel has over 250 videos so you can listen to every song used as an example. After all, playing by ear is about listening and GBT is the ONLY book that provides that. There's plenty of exercises using familiar songs and with a free download of MuseScore you can listen to them play. Playing by ear involves listening and with Garage Band Theory you can! The stuff in GBT is about understanding The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, The Grateful Dead and Vampire Weekend. It's NOT about analyzing Bach Fugues.... but you'll be able to if you want to. There are loads of exercises and examples using familiar songs and with the free downloads on the book's website you can watch and hear the notes play at any speed you choose. Book Description
Although there are hundreds of different instruments, for what we know as "Western" music there are only a total of seven different notes that are used. They're produced by different mechanisms so the noise is different, but the notes remain the same whether you're playing an oboe or a banjo. The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to understand how similar all the instruments are and how they all relate to the keyboard - and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info. Book Description
Learning to hear intervals isn't especially difficult but it's a really useful 'play by ear' skill to develop. This applies to all instruments. What a sax player's hands do when the melody note jumps by a 7th is different than what a banjologist's hands do, but they're doing the same thing musically. The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to understand how similar all the instruments are and how they all relate to the keyboard - and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info. Garage Band Theory - GBTool 07 The Key PDF Author: Duke Sharp

Pages : 56

Book Description
That jumble of odd looking symbols at the left end of a line of music is The Key. There's sharps and there's flats and numbers and who knows what else. One of the things you'll hear at a jam, or even gig, is someone will call out a tune. Then someone else says "What key is it in?" They get an answer, someone kicks it off and somehow everyone knows what all the chords are. And in most jam band situations like this, no one is reading music, but if they were, everyone's page would look the same, be written in the same key. But due to the evolution of orchestral instruments, when you see an orchestra reading that score, the violins have music that's written in one key, the tuba is in another and the xylophone is in another - and it sounds stupendous! You'll learn how that works. You'll learn about the Circle of Fifths, capos, modulation, transposing songs and transposing instruments and lots of stuff in between. The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to understand how similar all the instruments are and how they all relate to the keyboard - and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info. The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to understand how similar all the instruments are and how they all relate to the keyboard - and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info. Garage Band Theory - GBTool 12 Intro to Scales

Garage Band Theory - GBTool 12 Intro to Scales PDF Author: Duke Sharp

Book Description
Just about every musician has at some point thought that they should probably learn some scales and practice them. But almost no one ever does. I think that's partly because it's not clear WHY. There's at least two excellent reasons to practice scales. The obvious one is that it's good for coordination with both hands. The goal is to remove the physical obstacles that might impede a musical idea from materializing. It doesn't take long with any of these forms before you're able to play them with your eyes closed ... and that's exactly what you want, because then you're LISTENING to what you play, not watching your fingers wiggle. The second reason is that it's great ear training. When you can play the scales well enough to hear them inside your head, then you can hum a tune and figure out the chords while you're strolling down the avenue. I start with abbreviated 5 note examples of the scales in the open positions because that's enough. Then they're moved up the neck in to moveable forms with no open strings. Then you'll learn to link them together.. There's several well known examples that illustrate just how most melodies can be found in the scales, and they're tabbed in four different places on the guitar neck, as well as two different tabs for mandolin. The same stuff is available for ukulele in a free download. This book is an excerpt taken from Garage Band Theory and you might find that to be a better value - it's available on Amazon. Book Description
It's not especially difficult to find your way around a piece of printed music. It was designed to be simple ... and it IS. It appears to be complicated and confusing but that's mostly because you're not familiar with the symbols that guide a player around the page. Most of the songs you hear and learn to play have similar pieces and parts and those parts go together in predictable patterns. When you understand what's in this chapter, the world's music library will be available to you. You'll learn to read and make simplified 'charts' of the songs you're playing for your bandmates. The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to understand - and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info. (answer key included) This book is an excerpt taken from Garage Band Theory and you might find that to be a better value - it's available on Amazon. Garage Band Theory - GBTool 08 Chord Progressions

Garage Band Theory - GBTool 08 Chord Progressions PDF Author: Duke Sharp

Book Description
When I first started trying to explain how to play songs by ear, this is where I began. I thought that when someone understands that the vast majority of the music we hear is based around about five patterns, which are called chord progressions, and then they learn those patterns they'd be off and running. Not a bad idea, but what happened is that the student would not really know exactly what a chord is, which has to be explained in the context of a scale - and they wouldn't know what a scale is - and so on. This is one of those times that a coherent explanation can't start in the middle. But the basic premise is absolutely true. There are only a few chord progressions that can be thought of as the foundation for nearly all the music you'll ever hear, and they're rather simple. And they're all here. When you learn to recognize chord progressions ... musical patterns ... it becomes quite easy to anticipate the 'next' chord. When you're doing that, you're playing 'by ear. This book is an excerpt taken from Garage Band Theory and you might find that to be a better value - it's available on Amazon. Book Description
Lots of people can play a handful of chords, and that's enough to play lots and lots of fine music. But oddly enough, most can not begin to explain what a chord is. Chords aren't for everybody, virtually none of the instruments in an orchestra or marching band use them. But a good understanding of chord structure - where they come from, and why they're called what they're called - is useful stuff for everyone. The included diagrams and explanations make it easy to understand how similar all the instruments are and how they all relate to the keyboard - and the quiz at the end will ensure you've learned the info.
