Book Description
A time-independert technique to calculate gamma energy deposition in materials composing an infinite homogeneous medium cortainlng a uniform source was developed to study trends in nuclear heating. The cross section input is used in the code for calcuiating probabilities of events or branching ratios, and energy down-scatter. These quantities are used to determine the allocation of the photon energies of a specified source spectrum to the constituent elements of the medium. A single problem is run in a few seconds on the IBM 7090 computer. (J.R.D.).

Energy Deposition in the Atmosphere from High Altitude Gamma Ray Sources

Pages : 28
Book Description
This report gives results for the deposition of energy in the atmosphere from two high altitude sources of gamma rays. The solutions were obtained by use of the RAND Monte Carlo gamma ray transport code and are presented in such a way that they can be easily compared to results previously obtained for infinite homogeneous media. It has been shown in two particular cases that the deposition of energy from high altitude sources of gamma rays over a large volume of space does not differ from the equivalent problem with a uniform atmosphere by more than a factor of two.

The Propagation of Gamma Quanta in Matter
Author: O. I. Leipunskii
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483135942
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
The Propagation of Gamma Quanta in Matter deals with various problems of the propagation and absorption of gamma quanta in matter, including the occurrence of multiple scattering of radiation. A general account of theoretical methods of solving problems of multiple scattering of quanta is presented, with emphasis on the results of solving such problems. This book consists of three chapters and begins with a discussion on the interaction of gamma radiation with matter; multiple scattering of gamma quanta; and the distribution function and quantities connected with it. The next chapter focuses on the theory of multiple scattering of gamma quanta and covers subjects such as the transport equation and its analytical solution; method of moments; method of random sampling; and method of successive collisions. The last chapter examines the propagation of radiation for various geometrical configurations of the sources and absorbing media, paying particular attention to a point source in a homogeneous medium and on the boundary of two media; unidirectional radiation in a homogeneous medium; reflexion of gamma radiation from the surface of a scattering medium; a plane isotropic source; and a thick radiating layer of an absorbing medium. This monograph will appeal to students as well as physicists and engineers engaged in shield design problems.
