Fundamentals of Thermochemical Biomass Conversion

Fundamentals of Thermochemical Biomass Conversion PDF Author: R.P. Overend

Book Description
Throughout the world many projects have been underway to investigate the conversion of renewable biomass into energy and synthetic fuels by thermo chemical methods such as combustion, pyrolysis, gasification and lique faction. While many of these represent prior art used during the early 20th century, the recent decade since the 1970s oil shock has immeasurably increased the knowledge base for such processes. Much of the new knowledge has been gained by persons who were not trained in classical wood chemistry and there have not yet been many attempts to synthesize the knowledge into a corpus of systematic information. To bring this about the International Energy Agency's Forestry Energy collaboration, the Gas Research Institute, the National Research Council of Canada and the US Department of Energy jointly sponsored a conference on the Fundamentals of Thermochemical Biomass Conversion in Estes Park, Colorado which was held on October 18-22, 1982. The Conference, which was structured around invited plenary papers and contributions from researchers, served as the basis for the papers in this volume which reflect the substantial conclusions of the Conference. During the planning for the Conference, it was realized by the editors in their capacity as Co-chairmen that a major problem in biomass research was the lack of reproducibility between reported experiments and their inter comparison on account of the heterogeneity of biomass materials. A well known wood chemist, George M.

Pyrolysis

Pyrolysis PDF Author: Walker S. Donahue
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781607416692
Category : Pyrolysis
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Pyrolysis is the chemical decomposition of organic materials by heating in the absence or controlled amount of oxygen. Pyrolysis and gasification are thermo-chemical conversion routes which recovers energy from biomass and waste fuels. Pyrolysis is heavily used in the chemical industry, for example, to produce charcoal, activated carbon, methanol and other chemicals from wood. It is an important chemical process in several cooking procedures such as baking, frying and grilling. Pyrolytic processes are involved in basic research as well as in applied fields such as the industry. This book will survey the use of the pyrolysis in these fields and will also examine current research done in the nanoscience field.

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119791987
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 754

Book Description
Compiled by a well-known expert in the field, Liquid Biofuels provides a profound knowledge to researchers about biofuel technologies, selection of raw materials, conversion of various biomass to biofuel pathways, selection of suitable methods of conversion, design of equipment, selection of operating parameters, determination of chemical kinetics, reaction mechanism, preparation of bio-catalyst: its application in bio-fuel industry and characterization techniques, use of nanotechnology in the production of biofuels from the root level to its application and many other exclusive topics for conducting research in this area. Written with the objective of offering both theoretical concepts and practical applications of those concepts, Liquid Biofuels can be both a first-time learning experience for the student facing these issues in a classroom and a valuable reference work for the veteran engineer or scientist. The description of the detailed characterization methodologies along with the precautions required during analysis are extremely important, as are the detailed description about the ultrasound assisted biodiesel production techniques, aviation biofuels and its characterization techniques, advance in algal biofuel techniques, pre-treatment of biomass for biofuel production, preparation and characterization of bio-catalyst, and various methods of optimization. The book offers a comparative study between the various liquid biofuels obtained from different methods of production and its engine performance and emission analysis so that one can get the utmost idea to find the better biofuel as an alternative fuel. Since the book covers almost all the field of liquid biofuel production techniques, it will provide advanced knowledge to the researcher for practical applications across the energy sector. A valuable reference for engineers, scientists, chemists, and students, this volume is applicable to many different fields, across many different industries, at all levels. It is a must-have for any library.

Short Handbook on Fundamentals of Pyrolysis & Gasification

Short Handbook on Fundamentals of Pyrolysis & Gasification PDF Author: Parthasarathy Prakash
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
ISBN: 9783659715709
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
Pyrolysis and gasification processes, the two most widely used processes of energy conversion from biomass have been practised by mankind from time immemorial. However, it is after the crude oil crisis, the research world envisaged that these processes are very important to extract energy through alternate means of energy recovery from biomass. As the study on pyrolysis and gasification is enthralling and offering bright scope, many researchers have started to work on pyrolysis and gasification. Thus, the need of the hour is to disseminate some basic fundamentals about pyrolysis and gasification processes in order to provide a basic understanding to the peer and successive researchers. With this intention in mind, the current article discusses about the process, reactions and formulae involved in pyrolysis and gasification processes. The article also throws some light on the classification and controlling parameters of pyrolysis and gasification processes.

Recent Advances in Pyrolysis

Recent Advances in Pyrolysis PDF Author: Hassan Al- Haj Ibrahim
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1789840635
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
Pyrolysis is an irreversible thermochemical treatment process of materials at elevated temperatures in an inert atmosphere. It is basically a carbonisation process where an organic material is decomposed to produce a solid residue with high (or higher) carbon content and some volatile products. The decomposition reactions are accompanied in general with polymerisation and isomerisation reactions. The end products of pyrolysis can be controlled by optimizing pyrolysis parameters such as temperature and residence time. Pyrolysis is used heavily in the chemical industry to produce many forms of carbon and other chemicals from petroleum, coal, wood, oil shale, biomass or organic waste materials, and it is the basis of several methods for producing fuel from biomass. Pyrolysis also is the process of conversion of buried organic matter into fossil fuels.

Carbon and Coal Gasification

Carbon and Coal Gasification PDF Author: J.L. Figueiredo
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400943822
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 649

Book Description
Carbon gasification reactions form the basis of many important industrial processes, such as the combustion of coal and the produc tion of synthesis gas, fuel gases and activated carbons. They are also involved in metallurgical processes and in the regeneration of coked catalysts. Thus, understanding the fundamentals of carbon gasification is of vital importance for further technological development. Moreover, the subject is of interdisciplinary nature, involving chemistry, ma terials science and chemical engineering. Therefore, it was thought that an Advanced Study Institute would be fruitful in establishing the state of the art, in bringing together experts from the various sectors involved and in identifying areas of required research and industrial development. Such a meeting was held at Alvor, Portugal, from the 20th to the 31st May 1985, and the lectures presented the reof are collected in this volume. The present volume is organized in seven chapters. The Intro duction presents the carbon gasification reactions an~ their rele vance for particular processes and industrial uses. In the second chapter, the structures of carbon and coal are reviewed, together with methods of structural, chemical and textural characterization.
