Book Description
In the United States, the estimated lifetime risk of developing knee osteoarthritis is approximately 44%. Therefore, animal models are necessary to study the etiology of the disease as well as the efficacy of therapeutic treatments. In this study, a combination of anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) and partial medial meniscal transection (pMMT) was performed on rat knees to investigate changes in behavior, cartilage, and bone morphology due to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Hyaluronic acid (HA) intra-articular injection was administered to the knee one week after the surgeries. ACLT + pMMT surgery resulted in a temporary contralateral preference in static weight bearing, minor degeneration of the articular cartilage, and generally decreased bone quality. However, among the parameters analyzed, the most sensitive parameter for characterizing PTOA changes in the ACLT + pMMT model was trabecular thickness from [mu]CT analyses. Treatment with HA was also found to attenuate the progression of PTOA changes in articular cartilage and bone morphology.

Proteases and Their Receptors in Inflammation
Author: Nathalie Vergnolle
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3034801572
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
Proteases are everywhere from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, from virus to bacteria and in all human tissues, playing a role in many biological functions. Among these functions, the inflammatory reaction is of particular interest. In inflamed tissues, proteases can have a microbial and/or host origin and are involved not only in tissue remodeling, but also in specific signaling to resident or inflammatory cells, thereby contributing to the innate immune response. This volume presents all advances in our knowledge of the role proteases and their inhibitors play in various diseases associated with inflammatory response. Mechanisms involved in protease signaling to cells are presented, and the different types of proteases that are present at inflammatory sites and their effects on the course of inflammation are discussed. Finally, the evidence for considering proteases and their receptors as potential molecular targets for therapeutic interventions in the treatment of inflammatory diseases is discussed in the context of specific organ inflammatory pathologies (the lung, gastrointestinal tract, skin, joints, etc.).

Book Description
The enormous importance of the diseases of the locomotor system in all populations and the large component of general clinical practice which they represent have not, in the past, been matched by an appropriate pathological effort. Increasing expectation of an active and long life has resulted in a great increase in specialisation in Rheumatology and rehabilitation of those with crippling diseases. This volume presents many of the pathological advances that have followed this clini cal interest, beginning with reviews of changes in biological materials obtained by in vasive investigation of joints, continuing with an account of therapy Goint replace ment) and also describing a "new" hazard - hyperbaric injury. Experimental models of joint disease are also described as are other entities such as crystal deposition dis ease. A detailed consideration of the electron microscopy of bone tumours is included since this data is not widely available in current texts. Finally, the role of the HLA system in rheumatic disease is included, indicating the value of close co-operation between clinician and pathologist in defining and link ing the various rheumatic syndromes. Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat
Author: George A Parker
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128026960
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 464
Book Description
Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat should be of interest to toxicologic pathologists, toxicologists, and other biological scientists who are interested in the histomorphology of juvenile rats. For several decades the laboratory rat has been used extensively in nonclinical toxicology studies designed to detect potential human toxicity of drugs, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and environmental hazards. These studies traditionally have involved young adult rats that are 8-10 weeks of age as studies are started. It is becoming increasingly apparent that children and young animals may have different responses to drug/chemical exposures, therefore, regulatory agencies are emphasizing toxicology studies in juvenile animals. While the histologic features of organs from young adult and aged laboratory rats are well known, less is known about the histologic features of organs from juvenile rats. Final histologic maturity of many organs is achieved postnatally, thus immature histologic features must be distinguished from chemical- or drug-related effects. While this postnatal organ development is known to exist as a general concept, detailed information regarding postnatal histologic development is not readily available. The Atlas includes organs that are typically sampled in nonclinical toxicology studies and presents the histologic features at weekly intervals, starting at birth and extending through postnatal day 42. - Written and edited by highly experienced, board-certified toxicologic pathologists - Includes more than 700 high-resolution microscopic images from organs that are typically examined in safety assessment toxicology studies - Detailed figure legends and chapter narratives present the salient features of each organ at each time interval - Figures are available for further study via Elsevier's Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification - Valuable resource for toxicologic pathologists who are confronted with interpretation of lesions in juvenile rats in situations where age-matched concurrent controls are not available for comparison, e.g., with unscheduled decedents - Figures are available for further study on ScienceDirect with Virtual Microscope, which allows viewing of microscopic images at higher magnification

Temporomandibular Disorders
Author: National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309670489
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 427
Book Description
Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), are a set of more than 30 health disorders associated with both the temporomandibular joints and the muscles and tissues of the jaw. TMDs have a range of causes and often co-occur with a number of overlapping medical conditions, including headaches, fibromyalgia, back pain and irritable bowel syndrome. TMDs can be transient or long-lasting and may be associated with problems that range from an occasional click of the jaw to severe chronic pain involving the entire orofacial region. Everyday activities, including eating and talking, are often difficult for people with TMDs, and many of them suffer with severe chronic pain due to this condition. Common social activities that most people take for granted, such as smiling, laughing, and kissing, can become unbearable. This dysfunction and pain, and its associated suffering, take a terrible toll on affected individuals, their families, and their friends. Individuals with TMDs often feel stigmatized and invalidated in their experiences by their family, friends, and, often, the health care community. Misjudgments and a failure to understand the nature and depths of TMDs can have severe consequences - more pain and more suffering - for individuals, their families and our society. Temporomandibular Disorders: Priorities for Research and Care calls on a number of stakeholders - across medicine, dentistry, and other fields - to improve the health and well-being of individuals with a TMD. This report addresses the current state of knowledge regarding TMD research, education and training, safety and efficacy of clinical treatments of TMDs, and burden and costs associated with TMDs. The recommendations of Temporomandibular Disorders focus on the actions that many organizations and agencies should take to improve TMD research and care and improve the overall health and well-being of individuals with a TMD.
