Book Description
Increased woody plant dominance and degraded understory vegetation are important issues on rangelands in the Intermountain West. Land managers implement woody plant reduction treatments of sagebrush (Artemisia spp.), juniper (Juniperus spp.), and pinyon pine (Pinus spp.) to increase understory diversity and cover, restore wildlife habitat, increase forage, improve ecosystem functions, and reduce or manipulate fuels to increase ecosystem resilience to fire and resistance to invasive annual grasses...Using data collected as part of the Sagebrush Steppe Treatment Evaluation Project (SageSTEP), this guide summarizes fuel loads, vegetation cover by functional group, and shrub and tree stem density 10 years after sagebrush and pinyon-juniper reduction treatments. The data was collected at 16 study sites in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, and Utah, and is summarized by treatment type, region, and groups or woodland development phases based on pre-treatment vegetation.

Guide for Quantifying Post-treatment Fuels in the Sagebrush Steppe and Juniper Woodlands of the Great Basin

Book Description
Invasive species and woodland encroachment have caused extensive changes in the fire regimes of sagebrush steppe over the past 150 years. Land managers and resource specialists of the Great Basin are increasingly required to implement vegetation treatments to maintain habitat, reduce fire risk and restore landscapes to a more desirable state. Often it is difficult to measure treatment effectiveness because gathering pre- and post-treatment data is time-consuming and costly. In two years of post-treatment sampling across six Great Basin states, researchers from the Sagebrush Steppe Treatment and Evaluation Project (SageSTEP) measured the vegetation response to prescribed fire, tree mastication and cutting, shrub mowing, and herbicide application. Treated plots were compared to untreated control plots.

Guide to Fuel Treatments in Dry Forests of the Western U. S.
Author: Morris C. Johnson
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1428987665
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 310
Book Description
Analyzes a range of fuel treatments for representative dry forest stands in the Western U.S. dominated by ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, & pinyon pine. Six silvicultural options (no thinning; thinning from below to 50 trees per acre [tpa], 100 tpa, 200 tpa, & 300 tpa; & prescribed fire) are considered in combination with the surface fuel treatments (no treatment, pile & burn, & prescribed fire), resulting in a range of alternative treatments for each representative stand. Fuel treatment scenarios presented here can be used by resource managers to examine alternatives for Nat. Environ. Policy Act documents & other applications that require scientifically based info. to quantify the effects of modifying forest structure & surface fuels. Illustrations.
