Early Protestant Spirituality
Author: Scott H. Hendrix
Publisher: Paulist Press
ISBN: 9780809142118
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 372
Book Description
"Protestant spirituality" might sound like an oxymoron. Reformation scholar Scott Hendrix contends, however, that the spiritual tradition found among early Protestants was vibrant because spirituality meant all the ways they practiced their faith. Accordingly, these representative texts are grouped into nine categories: Personal Voices, Interpreting Scripture, Preaching, Admonishing and Consoling, Living the Faith, Singing, Praying, Reconstructing Sacraments, and Worshiping. This unique anthology of writings by twenty-five early Protestants is a rich resource for every teacher and student of Reformation Christianity. Book jacket.

Preparing for Death, Remembering the Dead
Author: Tarald Rasmussen
Publisher: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht
ISBN: 3647550825
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
Death and dying were not in the main focus of the denominational conflicts of the 16th century. However, pious literature covered these topics again and again, not only before the Reformation, but after it as well. Here, certain denominational differences are clearly visible. Partly, these differences consist in the use of genres: For example, funeral sermons are an often used genre among Lutherans, while they are much rarer in the Reformed tradition. Similar differences can be observed concerning epitaphs. In Roman Catholic areas, funeral sermons and epitaphs are common in the 16th century, too; but their religious function is often a different from the one in Lutheranism. Beyond such interdenominational differences, there are also interesting continuities and connections which the contributors of the volume analyze. For example, there is a certain continuity between 16th century Lutheran funeral sermons and the late medieval tradition of ars moriendi. The volume contains papers presented at the Second RefoRC Conference in Oslo in 2012, and is characterized by a multiconfessional and multidisciplinary approach, with contributions from Church History, Art History, Archaeology, History of Literature and Cultural History. Within a field of research dominated by specialized contributions (e.g. on ars moriendi traditions or on specific traditions of funeral monuments and funeral sermons), the broad approach of this volume may further stimulate to comparative and cross-confessional reflection.

Psychology and Religion
Author: Andrew Reid Fuller
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 9780822630364
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 322
Book Description
Can psychology explain religious behavior? This book explores the thinking of eight pioneers of religious psychology, including Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. Fuller presents the theories of these seminal figures in a clear, straightforward way, and also examines the limits of psychological explanations of religion. He concludes the book by exploring the contributions to religion by some prominent recent figures in psychology such as Ana-Maria Rizzuto, Paul W. Pruyser, and Bernard Spilka. Praise for the latest edition of Psychology and Religion: "Professor Fuller has made a valuable contribution to students of psychology and religion. He has brought together in a single volume eight of the most important thinkers in their field. By presenting the views of these seminal figures in a cogent, straightforward manner and with scholarly faithfulness to their ideas, Fuller has eased the task of exploring an extremely challenging area. He is to be commended for his impressive effort." -Steven M. Rosen, The College of Staten Island

Psychology and Religion
Author: Andrew R. Fuller
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
ISBN: 1461666074
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
This book articulates a broad range of theoretical viewpoints, both classical and contemporary, in the field of the psychology of religion. Chapters One through Eight are overviews of such 'classical' theorists as William James, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Gordon Allport, Abraham Maslow, Alan Watts, Erich Fromm, and Viktor Frankl. Chapters Nine through Twelve consider subsequent developments in the field, e.g., the views of object relations theorists on the God-image; empirical research on the scaling of religiousness; and modern consciousness research. Chapters Ten through Twelve are new to this edition and comprise an eclectic overview of the feminist psychology of religion, recent developments in the intersection of neuroscience and religion, and the evolutionary psychology of religion. Both wide-ranging and current, therefore, this book offers illuminating and in-depth coverage of major theorists and approaches. While its breadth makes it an excellent place to begin an exploration of the psychology of religion, its depth and detail provide the opportunity for a serious and rewarding immersion in the field.
