Stepping Back from the Ledge

Stepping Back from the Ledge PDF Author: Laura Trujillo
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 0593157613
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 209

Book Description
In this “seismically moving memoir” (The New York Times Book Review, Editors’ Choice), one woman asks a seemingly impossible question in the aftermath of her mother’s suicide: How do you mourn a loved one as you repair the injuries they inflicted? “Laura Trujillo resurfaces from the dark ‘sub-basement’ of despair with assurances for us all: There is hope. There is healing. Always, there is love. This book will save lives.”—Connie Schultz, author of The Daughters of Erietown ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New Yorker Laura Trujillo had been close to her mother for most of her adult life, raising her four children within a few miles of their beloved grandmother’s Phoenix home. But just three months after moving her young family to Cincinnati for a new job, Laura receives shocking news: Her mother had taken her own life—by jumping off a ledge into the Grand Canyon, a place Laura knew her mother had always loved. Laura and her mother had shared a profound and special bond, yet each had also kept from the other the deepest truths about their lives. As an adult, Laura finally broke her silence about the sexual abuse she had suffered as a teenager at the hands of her stepfather—a secret Laura had buried to protect her mother. After her mother’s death, Laura embarks on an emotional odyssey, searching for clues that could explain the depression, intergenerational trauma, and shared heartbreaks in her family. When she returns to the Grand Canyon, it becomes an oasis that nurtures Laura’s search for redemption and peace. As Laura wrestles with her feelings, she forges a new path forward. Moving and intimate, powerfully told, Stepping Back from the Ledge is a remarkable exploration of the bond between a mother and daughter, and of the hope that can come from facing the truth.

From the Shadows of Suicide

From the Shadows of Suicide PDF Author: Diane Hollands
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1445233452
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 267

Book Description
In an attempt to escape the unbearable pain after losing my son Ben to suicide, I would withdraw deep within myself to seek refuge, and in this isolation my screams remained silent and expression became muted. Because the pain is ever near, sadly, this silence tends to be unending and little is said about the aftermath of suicide but, I believe, many would wish to feel understood in their continuing battle with its effects, and those around us who could only express the magnitude of this loss by saying 'I can't begin to know what you are going through' might prefer to be informed. Touching all the rawness within has been a slow but determined process and if my story can help to express and validate the pain of some, give insight to others and in any way promote the prevention of suicide, I could, in the telling of it, find some gladness.

Shadows of Fatherhood, Jung, and Film

Shadows of Fatherhood, Jung, and Film PDF Author: Mark Holmwood
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040106560
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 129

Book Description
Every picture tells a story, and stories have the power to educate. Looking at two key Jungian archetypes – the father and the shadow – from a challenging perspective, this book investigates the negative, shadowy side of fatherhood and its detrimental effect on children by presenting a collection of stories from all over the world. Blurring the line between fiction and fact, art and academic theory, the book travels across a difficult psychosocial landscape, discussing family life, mental health, and criminality. Mark Holmwood highlights the educational value of these stories whilst exploring the father–child dynamic, adverse childhood experiences, father hunger, asymmetrical power relations, psychological manipulation, narcissism, domestic violence, sexual abuse, patricide, and filicide. Jungian and post-Jungian viewpoints on the bond between fathers and their children are woven into a bigger, interconnected narrative which invites the readers to re-think clinical, sociological, and mythological connections through the lens of modern masculinity and men’s studies. Discussing five different types of negative fathers, the book presents their children’s struggles and underlines their resilience at the same time, emphasising assertion, challenge, questioning, and if necessary, acceptance, all being a part of the complex and transformative psychological process called individuation. Written with a clear and direct style, Shadows of Fatherhood, Jung, and Film will be of interest to mental health professionals, Jungian scholars, students, teachers and researchers in social sciences, humanities, and the arts, as well as general readers with a distinctive interest in men’s studies, father–child relations, and cinema.

Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Faithful Exit

Faithful Exit PDF Author: Ron Jacobs

Pages : 46

Book Description
Today, there is an ever growing demand for control over the time, place and means of dying. Many governments are passing laws which allow people to choose death once it appears that their life will end soon anyway. It is hard to argue with their logic. Why shouldn't we have the option of death with dignity rather than the desperate struggle of the suffering in their last days? This book is not an attempt to argue the legality or morality of assisted suicide. It is birthed from my own encounter with the desire to escape from incredible pain. In my struggle, I came to the place where I wanted to die, I prayed for death, I longed for it to come but it remained at a distance. I read books on suicide, made plans on how I could do it and ensure success and walked right up to the edge of that chasm. Few people really understand the kind of pain that can drive a person to that place. My encounter with a very rare, untreatable and painful disease brought me to that place. As a Christian, I met God there and he taught me some valuable lessons that I want to share with you. Some of you may feel guilty for even having the feeling that you want to end your life. Others are even at this moment making a plan to finish it. I'm not here to condemn you. Please just take a moment and listen to my story before you do anything.
