Overwhelmed with shame and grief she fled from the room, and in the privacy of her own apartment flung herself on her knees, and in an agony of prayer besought the Lord to save her poor sister from the foul tyranny of which she was now the victim. Rising from prayer somewhat calmed and comforted, she sat down to ponder over this new discovery, and to consider what was her duty under the circumstances. After due deliberation and asking guidance of the "Wonderful Counsellor," she determined boldly to communicate to her sister the fact that she had seen the book, and to remon strate with her affectionately, but strongly, against the degrading and enslaving course on which she was entering. p She knew that she had the powerful influence of Mr. Bayley against her, but it was the Lord's cause, and she would trust in His strength, not in her own. Determined to carry out her resolve at once, she asked Jane Hughes where Miss Rumford was, and learning that she was sitting alone in the breakfast parlour working some bookmarkers, with crosses and other emblematic devices, for Mr. Bayley, she quickly descended, opened the parlourdoor, and asked Florence if she might come in and sit with her for a short time, to which Florence consented. apter mini. THE CONFESSIONAL DISCUSSED. FLORENCE," she began, "I have come to acknowledge a fault which I have committed." Florence looked surprised. The intercourse of the sisters recently had been very limited and formal. Mary's manner was so much like that of days gone by when they were children together that Florence was touched, and old feelings revived. "What have you...

The Curate's Awakening, The Lady's Confession & The Baron's Apprenticeship (Complete Trilogy) PDF Author: George MacDonald
Publisher: DigiCat

Category : Fiction

Book Description
"Thomas Wingfold, Curate or The Curate's Awakening" is the first novel of the series that begins with the story of a compliant and lifeless curate in the Church of England and the profound changes that happen in his life and the people around him. Thomas Wingfold is a clergyman who is losing belief in the faith, but he goes through many transformations as the story unfolds. "Paul Faber, Surgeon or The Lady's Confession" is the sequel to The Curate's Awakening and it tells the story of a village doctor and a proven atheist. His friend and village curate, Thomas Wingfold is trying to bring him closer to the Church, but constantly ends up failing in those attempts. Doctor believes that only victories and tragedies of life can bring one to Jesus. However, after one accident, Faber saves life of a beautiful woman and they fall in love, but her secret past comes in between. "There and Back or The Baron's Apprenticeship" is the third and final novel that completes the series. Another story about finding faith in God follows a life-changing journey of Baron Richard from skeptical atheist to a true believer. The main character sets quite an example of manhood for young people. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle.

A Foreign and Wicked Institution?

A Foreign and Wicked Institution? PDF Author: Rene Kollar
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1606083368
Category : Religion

Pages : 319

Book Description
Many in Victorian England harbored deep suspicion of convent life. In addition to looking at anti-Catholicism and the fear of both Anglican and Catholic sisterhoods that were established during the nineteenth century, this work explores the prejudice that existed against women in Victorian England who joined sisterhoods and worked in orphanages and in education and were committed to social work among the urban poor. Women, according to some of these critics, should remain passive in matters of religion. Nuns, however, did play an important role in many areas of life in nineteenth-century England and faced hostility from many who felt threatened and challenged by members of female religious orders. The accomplishments of the nineteenth-century nuns and the opposition they overcame should serve as both an example and encouragement to all men and women committed to the Gospel.
