Book Description
As a child I was interested in history and genealogy and through the years I had gathered a lot of stories. Out for an afternoon sail with Mrs. Montgomery on NILIRAGA, sometimes until the middle of October, often times just the two of us, I would tell her some of these stories. She would say, "Ralph! You must write all this down." Eventually I did write much about the early history of Mount Desert Island, shipbuilding history, other historical facts and stories of relatives and people that I knew. Albie and I discussed how to go about recording the story of the Stanley family and I suggested that we talk with Bill Bunting (William H. Bunting). We started by asking Bill to read all that I had written over the years. His response was, "You are a wonderful story-teller when describing people you know. As a youngster and as a young man you had an unusually sharp eye, sharp ear, and sensitive appreciation and understanding of the human comedy, all the while realizing that comedy and tragedy are often intertwined. You show that one can be insightful without being judgmental."So with this advice I sat down to the computer, rearranged, cut and pasted until I have the story of the Stanley family and those whose lives crossed, often with mutual respect and trust.

Baker Island

Baker Island PDF Author: Cornelia J. Cesari
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1467129127
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1

Book Description
Baker Island is a quintessential Maine island, frozen in time. It was settled in 1806 by one family, and the island's population peaked at about two dozen people in five households at mid-century. The US government made use of the island's strategic location at the entrance to Frenchman's Bay with a lighthouse and military facilities. Wealthy, artistic, and academic summer visitors to the region--so-called rusticators--discovered its charm as a day trip destination. However, by 1930, only the lightkeeper's family remained. Now mostly part of Acadia National Park, these 123 acres are precious to a disproportionate number of people. Every season, visitors flock to the area, scenic tour airplanes fly overhead, and narrated boat tours skirt the shoreline. Park rangers lead interpretive tours almost daily, leaving from Bar Harbor for half-day visits. Each summer, thousands moor their private boats and row ashore--honeymooning, celebrating, and even scattering ashes. Five generations of rusticators have held picnics on the tempestuous south shore's expansive pink granite surface known as the "Dance Floor."

The Field House

The Field House PDF Author: Robin Clifford Wood
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1647420466
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 370

Book Description
Born of illustrious New England stock, Rachel Field was a National Book Award–winning novelist, a Newbery Medal–winning children’s writer, a poet, playwright, and rising Hollywood success in the early twentieth century. Her light was abruptly extinguished at the age of forty-seven, when she died at the pinnacle of her personal happiness and professional acclaim. Fifty years later, Robin Clifford Wood stepped onto the sagging floorboards of Rachel’s long-neglected home on the rugged shores of an island in Maine and began dredging up Rachel’s history. She was determined to answer the questions that filled the house’s every crevice: Who was this vibrant, talented artist whose very name entrances those who still remember her work? Why is that work—so richly remunerated and widely celebrated in her lifetime—so largely forgotten today? The journey into Rachel’s world took Wood further than she ever dreamed possible, unveiling a life fraught with challenge, and buried by tragedy, and yet incandescent with joy. The Field House is a book about beauty—beauty in Maine island landscapes, in friendship, love, and heartbreak; beauty hidden beneath a woman’s woefully unbeautiful exterior; beauty in a rare, delightful spirit that still whispers from the past. Just listen.
