The overriding idea behind my thesis is creating social interactions that lead to opportunities to organize communities that, in turn, are driven by my art praxis. Therefore becoming an integral part of my creative process since praxis is an art form informed by theory and that in turn also informs theory. The larger issue is ultimately answering the question: as artists how can we organize communities by use of our own creative process? Particularly in a way that is achievable given the, at times, confining parameters of our individual practices and programs? How do we create sustainable, organic models of community engagement that become self-driven institutions in the communities we impact but that are also temporal outsider to? This thesis is a holistic analysis of Amin Gulgee’s trajectory in contemporary art. For over three decades, his artistic praxis has been breaking new ground in sculpture, performance and curation, centred in the context of Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city. In the body of this thesis, various lenses are adopted with which to analyse Amin Gulgee and his extensive oeuvre, with the artist’s voice coming through strongly throughout, given the basis afforded to the author by a series of recorded interviews. Two of the more significant frames – an idea of artistic nonduality and the Pentecost as art process – are infused in the first two chapters. The third chapter is devoted to copper, Gulgee’s primary medium, and its material agency. The fourth chapter investigates the ‘Matter of Form’, building from John Dewey’s nondualistic argument for the inseparability of matter and form in a work of art, to pursue an analysis of Amin’s sculptural forms throughout his trajectory. To understand how Amin Gulgee nondualistically operates in a space in between aesthetic practices, it is important to apprehend the way in which his sculptural things express their collective agency in the installation process. The fifth chapter, ‘Inhabiting A Space In Between’, enters into a more experiential discourse; a vital feature of exploring Amin’s praxis of artistic nonduality. The sixth chapter, ‘Telling in our own Tongues’, endeavours to demonstrate the interwoven essence of the sculptural, performative, curatorial, and discursive threads in the tangled multi-dimensionality of Amin Gulgee’s artistic web. The thesis concludes by exploring his collaborative methodology that I term ‘integrated protagonism’; a distinctive feature of his artistic web. This speaks to the way in which the creative energies of a network are activated in a framework of non-separation between self and other.
