In this text/workbook designed for one-semester music fundamentals courses for non-majors, readers will learn the rudiments of music theory as they methodically explore how music is organized and perceived as listeners, performers, critical thinkers, and composers. Research from the field ofmusic perception and cognition suggests that teaching music through a "sound to symbol" approach is an effective way of teaching both musical thought and music knowledge-a perspective that is just the opposite of what is currently found in music fundamentals texts. Using a perceptual orientationimproves the development of aural acuity and links student's intuitive understanding of music to conceptual knowledge. While the authors' approach is influenced by the Kodaly concept of music education, the text does not presuppose familiarity with Kodaly studies and can easily be used without it. The text's most important innovation is the early emphasis on active music-making, which is supported by workbookactivities. At the same time, the text clearly covers all of the topics found in music fundamentals courses.
