Book Description
In his autobiography, Mike Klein describes growing up in Transylvania following the traumatic events of the Holocaust and the communist takeover of Romania. Mike led a carefree childhood, but as a young adult, he felt increasingly constrained by Romania’s totalitarian government. In 1975, he left everything he knew to come to the United States. Mike writes with humility and humor about his path to achieving the American dream, and the love story between him and his wife, also an immigrant from Romania. His life on two continents illustrates the power of reinvention, hard work, love, and loyalty. Mike Klein is a Romanian American born to Holocaust survivors in Gherla, Romania, in 1949. At twenty-six, he immigrated to the US following his wife, Judith. Both successful IT professionals, Mike and Judith raised two sons in Bethesda, Maryland, and traveled the world together. In retirement, Mike splits his time between Bethesda and Florida and enjoys travel, opera, his sons, three grandchildren, and extended family and friends.

Ceausescu and the Securitate

Ceausescu and the Securitate PDF Author: Dennis Deletant
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1315481553
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
First Published in 2017. This book contains Deletant's research and view that an inescapable feature of life in Romania under Ceausescu was the ubiquity of the Securitate or the security police, known officially for much of the period as the Department of State Security of the Ministry of the Interior. He seeks to right the omission in Romanian literature, until now, of the mechanism of terror which Stalin used in Romania to enforce his will and about the organisation of the Department of State Security.

The Walls Behind the Curtain

The Walls Behind the Curtain PDF Author: Harold B. Segel
Publisher: University of Pittsburgh Press
ISBN: 0822978024
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 449

Book Description
Because of their visibility in society and ability to shape public opinion, prominent literary figures were among the first targets of Communist repression, torture, and incarceration. Authors such as Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn famously documented the experience of internment in Soviet gulags. Little, however, has been published in the English language on the work of writers imprisoned by other countries of the Soviet bloc. For the first time, The Walls Behind the Curtain presents a collection of works from East European novelists, poets, playwrights, and essayists who wrote during or after their captivity under communism. Harold B. Segel paints a backdrop of the political culture and prison and labor camp systems of each country, detailing the onerous conditions that writers faced. Segel then offers biographical information on each writer and presents excerpts of their writing. Notable literary figures included are Vaclav Havel, Eva Kanturkova, Milan SimeCka, Adam Michnik, Milovan Djilas, Paul Goma, Tibor Dery, and Visar Zhiti, as well as many other writers. This anthology recovers many of the most important yet overlooked literary voices from the era of Communist occupation. Although translated from numerous languages, and across varied cultures, there is a distinct commonality in the experiences documented by these works. The Walls Behind the Curtain serves as a testament to the perseverance of the human spirit and a quest for individual liberty that many writers forfeited their lives for.

Medieval and Renaissance Famagusta

Medieval and Renaissance Famagusta PDF Author: Michael J. K. Walsh
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351918648
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 311

Book Description
There was a time seven centuries ago when Famagusta's wealth and renown could be compared to that of Venice or Constantinople. The Cathedral of St Nicholas in the main square of Famagusta, serving as the coronation place for the Crusader Kings of Jerusalem after the fall of Acre in 1291, symbolised both the sophistication and permanence of the French society that built it. From the port radiated impressive commercial activity with the major Mediterranean trade centres, generating legendary wealth, cosmopolitanism, and hedonism, unsurpassed in the Levant. These halcyon days were not to last, however, and a 15th century observer noted that, following the Genoese occupation of the city, 'a malignant devil has become jealous of Famagusta'. When Venice inherited the city, it reconstructed the defences and had some success in revitalising the city's economy. But the end for Venetian Famagusta came in dramatic fashion in 1571, following a year long siege by the Ottomans. Three centuries of neglect followed which, combined with earthquakes, plague and flooding, left the city in ruins. The essays collected in this book represent a major contribution to the study of Medieval and Renaissance Famagusta and its surviving art and architecture and also propose a series of strategies for preserving the city's heritage in the future. They will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Gothic, Byzantine and Renaissance art and architecture, and to those of the Crusades and the Latin East, as well as the Military Orders. After an introductory chapter surveying the history of Famagusta and its position in the cultural mosaic that is the Eastern Mediterranean, the opening section provides a series of insights into the history and historiography of the city. There follow chapters on the churches and their decoration, as well as the military architecture, while the final section looks at the history of conservation efforts and assesses the work that now needs to be done.
