Book Description
Excerpt from From Gettysburg to the Rapidan: The Army of the Potomac, July, 1863, to April, 1864 The evening of the 3d of July closed the fighting at Gettysburg. The 4th and part of the 5th were occupied by the Army of the Potomac in attending to the wounded and burying the dead. A field return of the army on the 5th of July showed that its seven infantry corps had, on an average, the numbers usually found in a division, four of them having about 5,000 enlisted men each, the total of the seven amounting to 47,087 enlisted men armed and equipped. On the night of the 4th of July the Army of Northern Virginia began its retreat, leaving behind a large number of its wounded.
