From Bosch's Stable

From Bosch's Stable PDF Author: Matthijs Ilsink
Publisher: W Books
ISBN: 9789462583078
Category : Epiphany in art
Languages : en
Pages : 95

Book Description
In Christian tradition, Epiphany is celebrated on 6 January to mark the revelation of the divine nature of Jesus to the three kings from the East. This feast was an extremely popular theme in fine art around the year 1500. It has left us with a large number or festive portrayal, in which the artists excel themselves in their efforts to depict exotic figures and their clothing and attributes. Hieronymus Bosch portrayed the theme a number of times. Two of his own paintings have survived. One of them is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the other is in the Museo del Prado (Madrid). Both paintings were copied and imitated from early on, so we know that they were appreciated. This early appreciation from Bosch's own time is striking. Over thirty early copies remain, making Bosch's interpretation one of the most popular compositions from the Low Countries of the later Middle Ages. The Bosch Research and Conservation Project has studies a number of these copies very closely. What Bosch achieved with the representation of the adoration of the magi is presented here in an accessible way and placed in the correct artistic and cultural/historical context, so that this book is well worth reading, and looking at, for both art historians and the general public.

Thank God They're on Our Side

Thank God They're on Our Side PDF Author: David F. Schmitz
Publisher: Univ of North Carolina Press
ISBN: 0807875961
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
Despite its avowed commitment to liberalism and democracy internationally, the United States has frequently chosen to back repressive or authoritarian regimes in parts of the world. In this comprehensive examination of American support of right-wing dictatorships, David Schmitz challenges the contention that the democratic impulse has consistently motivated U.S. foreign policy. Compelled by a persistent concern for order and influenced by a paternalistic racism that characterized non-Western peoples as vulnerable to radical ideas, U.S. policymakers viewed authoritarian regimes as the only vehicles for maintaining political stability and encouraging economic growth in nations such as Nicaragua and Iran, Schmitz argues. Expediency overcame ideology, he says, and the United States gained useful--albeit brutal and corrupt--allies who supported American policies and provided a favorable atmosphere for U.S. trade. But such policy was not without its critics and did not remain static, Schmitz notes. Instead, its influence waxed and waned over the course of five decades, until the U.S. interventions in Vietnam marked its culmination.

This work, a revised and greatly expanded new English edition of an earlier French text by the same authors, presents important new developments and applications of the theory of rigid analytic spaces to abelian varieties, "points of rigid spaces," étale cohomology, Drinfeld modular curves, and Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology. The exposition is concise, self-contained, rich in examples and exercises, and will serve as an excellent graduate-level text for the classroom or for self-study.

Networks and Groups

Networks and Groups PDF Author: Bhaskar Dutta
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540247904
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 495

Book Description
When Murat Sertel asked us whether we would be interested in organizing a special issue of the Review of Economic Design on the formation of networks and groups, we were happy to accept because of the growing research on this important topic. We were also pleasantly surprised at the response to our request for submissions to the special issue, receiving a much larger number of sub missions than we had anticipated. In the end we were able to put together two special issues of insightful papers on this topic. Given the growing interest in this topic, we also decided (with encouragement from Murat) to combine the special issues in the form of a book for wider dissemination. However, once we had decided to edit the book, it was natural to move beyond the special issue to include at least some of the papers that have been influential in the literature on the formation of networks. These papers were published in other journals, and we are very grateful to the authors as well as the journals for permission to include these papers in the book.
